Greenlawn teen was rescued from a pool at the Huntington Township YMCA after holding his breath underwater for too long, Suffolk police said.
Marc Dawson, 17, was unresponsive when he was pulled out of the water and transported to Huntington Hospital in serious condition, police said. No criminality is suspected. Dawson's family told police he wants to eventually qualify for the Navy SEALs. To become a SEAL, applicants must pass a screening that includes swimming 500 yards in less than 12 minutes and 30 seconds.
Police said others at the pool were aware he was training, and that Dawson had signaled that he wanted the stay underwater before he passed out.
Eileen Knauer, executive director of the Huntington YMCA, declined to comment. "We'd like to express our concern to the family," she said. "They're in our prayers."
