I DEP in the Navy a week or so ago and I picked Operations Specialist (OS) as my job. It wasnt really what I wanted. I was thinking about Boatswains Mate or Gunners Mate. But they really didnt have many A School openings so I was kinda forced into it. Can anybody thats been in the Navy tell me more about this job. If I graduate BUD/S and make it to a Team will it affect what I do in the Teams at all. Thanks

Just in case you didn't get my email... I am an OS3 stationed on the USS Bonhomme Richard in San Diego. I can answer your question that you posted on the forum. If you signed up under the "SEAL Contract" you will go to bootcamp and around week two or three you will take the PST. Since you will be sitting around until then so make sure you go into bootcamp in very good shape. You should be able to get theese times before you go, theese aren't the minimums but this is where you want to at least be at: 500 Yard Swim in 9:30; 90 pushups; 90 situps; and Mile & half = 9:00 in boots and Utility pants. You will be given three chances to pass the PST in bootcamp, but you should really try to pass it the first time. When you get to OS "A" School which is in Dam Neck, VA, you will be in the Special Programs Group. This group is comprised of sailors that are going to BUD/S, EOD, and SWCC. This group meets at 0330 in the morning for PT. While you are at "A" School, the actual school stuff is not hard at all. Just keep your mind focused on BUD/S, and not going out and getting drunk all the time. There will be plenty of time for that later. "A" School is only 12 weeks long somake the best of the time you are there. Dam Neck is really close to Little Creek, VA. This is where the East Coast SEAL Motivator is located, try to contact him for better workouts, techniques, and othere stuff. After "A" School you will go to BUD/S in Coronado, CA. From there you are on your own. No matter what job you pick it won't matter if you make it through BUD/S. You won't do that job if you're a SEAl. But anyways, the OS rate is OK. If for some reason you have to go to the fleet, pick a small ship, ie, DD, DDG, CG, or FFG. You will do a lot more on the smaller ships. Don't pick a Big ship!!! As an OS you mainly look at radars and charts. I hoped this helped you. If you need some help just drop me an email at "davidsja@bonhomme-richard.navy.mil".

Hman, you are in such a similiar situation as me. I choose QM( apparently now QM is being rolled into OS) but I didnt really qant QM when I choose it but they threw bonuses at me, I still refused and then my recuiter came and for like an hr persuaded me to take it. I regret that day. a few weeks ago I told um I want IT or ET and the SEAL challenge contract, and I'll be happy, but its been weeks and I call um 1-2 every week and nothing has surfaced from Meps. They are obviuosly trying to delay me until Oct. when I leave. My bro is in the Army and has given me alota advice, and he regrets believing what his recruiter said, and he told me to just tell the recruiter what you want, otherwise you'll start college when the time rolls around, or say you'll consider another branch. I know it sounds dishonest(iam actually taking some community college classes just to make use of the time) but it works. He's been in there for 3 years now and he says he wished he coulda just given thoose recuiters a lil more fight then being stuck with a job that he doent enjoy for 3 whole years. Also, even if you make SEAL's im pretty sure your still known as your source rate, and to advance in rank like(E4-E7) you'll actually ahveta study(from what i've been told) the material that is your source rate, but like ive seen in Highschool, if im gonna be studying anything it better be somethin I find interesting and somethin I find resourceful in the civillian world. Good luck hman!

Plat,

Yeah, I have already been there.... not what I'm looking for. I want to hear it from the horse's mouth or as close to it as possible. Thank you for the link though.
