Im curious, is Aviation Antisubmarine Warfare Operator (AW) a SEAL source rate? According to http://sealchallenge.navy.mil/seal/bec_sourcerates.asp it is, but it is not listed on http://usmilitary.about.com/library/milinfo/navyjobs/navyjobs2/blseal.htm as a SEAL source rating. I was wondering if maybe someone could possibly help me out here. Thanks.

I'm going in as an undesignated Airman. Any suggestions on a rate I can strike for that's desirable to the Teams, yet practicle for the civilian world?

Note: the SEAL program is open to all enlisted Navy active duty members (with exception to established requirements) regardless of their rating. Once you are in the SEAL program you will be required to change your rating to one of the rates listed below, if applicable.
The above quote was taken from the official Navy SEAL website. According to this website only AB, AO, and AW are the ratings that are compatible with the Teams. In the AB rating there are three different paths to take, ABE, ABF, and ABH, "E" is arresting gear on flight decks and landbases, "F" deals with aviation fuel in likewise the same locations, and "H" is handler which encompasses signalman, tow-tractor driver, crash and salvage, and director. AO is ordnance, e.g. bombs etc., and AW is anti-submarine warfare which is aircrew compatible which means you fly and find subs.
As to your question of what relates to the civilian world, you will learn real world skills with any rate you pick or are assigned to. As an undesignated airman you will likely be sent either to a carrier or a squadron upon completion of apprenticeship school. That was the path that I took into the Navy. Which means you will likely wind up in the line shack(squadron), or as a blue shirt(carrier).
My suggestion, unless you like carrying around chains and chocks, you should take the SEAL PST as soon as you can. In your case during boot camp.
