Is there a certain way you have to swim this. Or can you use the dolphin kick?

Let me start by saying I am not a SEAL, but I am pretty sure that as long as you stay underwater the whole time and don't kick off the wall you can do it however you want. The best stroke for this is the breaststroke in my humble opinion.

in the 234 dvds they all seemed to be using the breaststroke.

Proper procedure for the 50 meter is to drop in feet first, summersault underwater, swim a 25 meter, turn around pushing off the wall and swim back 25 meters to where you started. Use the breast stroke and relax.

I'm 16 and I've tried the swim and safely I can only do 25m before I have to come up for air. I know I could go a little farther but I'm not gonna risk anything if no ones there, but it wouldnt be another 25m. I was wondering if there were any exercises that would improve lung capacity. Also I plan on going to Bud/s around the age of 22-23, so my lungs would more than likely be bigger allowing me to stay under longer by then right?

i dont know of any excersises ... but.. i do know that this improved how long i could hold my breath .... when u take ur breath that ur goin to take.. take 2 deep breaths.. on the 3rd deep breath ... hold ur breath and u *should* hold it a tad longer then usual... least that works for me... as for excersises.. dunno.. i've never done any excersises in particular.

A good exersise to practice is to get it out your head that your going to drown. Running helps your lungs out but not enough were your going to feel comfortable doing 50 meters its all in your head once u get it out you'll be fine..

i'd say a good workout might be to ... swim as far as u can this time.. then next time u do it... try and make urself swim a tad bit further... even if its only a foot further... stilla foot closer to completing it.. and EVERYTIME u swim it again.. force urself to do just 1 more foot further.. until u make it the whole way.

on a side note.. the lower in the water u are... the easier it is to hold ur breath for longer periods of time... it has to do with the pressure changes :D .. dont feel like explaining y ... but... if u swim like.. an inch off the floor of the pool .. u'll find u'll be able to swim alot further then u were previously.. ( unless u already do this.. in which case u'll swim the same distance :o )

There is one thing that might help you. You will still feel that you need air but its nice to have a mental push when you are down there.

Just remember: When you feel like you are gonna die you still have about 1 minute befor you pass out. And normaly you dont take longer than max 3 min to do the 50. But dont try this when you are alone, for a pretty obvious reason.

good luck with it

The way I'm able to do it is that it takes me about 33ish-35 seconds to swim the first 25m then about 22-25ish seconds to swim the 2nd. I wasn't able to do it before a while back because i came to the conclusion that i was just outta shape. Which was damn well the problem. what i first started doing was I tried just holding my breath underwater without swimming just to see how long i could do it for, and i could hold it for about 1min 10 seconds Then i tried swimming and I couldn't swim more than 30 seconds without surfaceing and dieing for air. Eventually I just got myself into better shape.(bike, swim, run) and a few months later i was able to do it without a problem. with the front flip and everything. I figured it was because i would become winded too early and the better i trained my lungs with cardio the longer I'd last underwater. and i was right.
But than again I sorta just spaz underwater to get myself to the end and back. So if YOU HAVE to do the breaststroke than I'm screwed.
