Ok last week one of the recuiters at my local offic sent in a "DAR" to MEPS requesting me to change my rate from QM to IT. He called me back today and told me my score didnt qualify for IT but he could get me a position in OS. Then I asked him what would change on my contract and he said Id loose the SEAL challenge and your bonus would now be 4k instead of 10k. Hes giving me till tommorow morning to decide. Ive already decided that im not taking it, especially since the leave date for the OS position is the end of this month, and I dont feel fully ready for the BUD/S screening, even though my pt scores are far above passing. I really want IT, I wish I could just take the freakin asvab over again. I took it 1 1/2 years ago early on a groggy school morning. Im thinking of just calling back the Chief tommorow and telling him that I want IT/SEAL challenge otherwise im not joining. However, if I dep out, are there any penalties or would it hurt my chances at BUD/S or becoming a SEAL. I need some suggestions.Thanks.

i went through meps in March and got IT and i dont' leave till next year. So i'm thinking it might be awhile if u actually get IT before u leave.

hey man im set up with QM and the SEAL contract, so im pretty much in ur same situation and i heard about it being rolled into an operation specialist n everything. Im not sure how it all works but if ur goin to BUD/s then it reallly doesnt matter what ur rate is. I wish i could change QM too though man! If I was u id just stick with what i have. good luck man.

Oooo. Thats proly why they had OS opened for me. The recuiter was going on like he had to bust his butt for this to open up. Ya reason why I dont want QM is because to advance in the Enlisted rank you haveta take a test on your rate. Even though SEAL's is why im joining the Navy there is no point in putting time into a rate that wont serve you much purpose outside the Navy.Especially since what I wana do when I leave the Navy is be in the techinal/computer field. My mom actually met an ex-QM in the Navy and he said the same thing. But to be QM/SEAL im sure is a different story.

Does it make a difference if you have the SEAL challenge or not? Id rather have it, and woudlnt be satisfied if i left home without in in my contract.

yea im not too excited about QM because its not something that would come in handy out of the Navy at all but im afraid that if i change i might loose the SEAL and theres no way im gona sacrifice that at this point cause ive put way too much into my training. if u did loose the contract though id say that if u were in very good shape and could kill all the pst scores you could still get into BUD/s but why risk it? if nything you could always reenlist and choose a different rate in four years or somethin. good luck with that decision but id say SEAL comes before nything.

From what I understand, because this is the path I'm going, is that the SEAL challenge contract is just a name on the sheet. They wouldnt let me sign for the SEAL challenge because my eyes are 20/50, 20/100, which they told me they couldnt waiver. Lo and Behold I call the Dive Motivators at Great Lakes and he tells me that they can waiver it and if I do well on the PFT at Boot, they will put me right into BUD/s. I would say just call a Dive Motivator because I think the SEAL challenge on the contract is just a piece of mind type of thing.

Ya I'd call a motivator but where do I find one or the phone # for one? the SEAL challenge seems like something they just throw on the contract to make people feel like they are on there way to becoming a SEAL. I remember someone saying that there are some ways you can advance rank quicker and apply for some bells and whistles. But good luck to you guys^ seem well devoted.

Guys, I'm in the Navy right now and what I could tell you about having the SEAL contract is that it bumps you up to third class petty officer upon graduation of BUDS regardless of rank at that time. I would stick to my guns about IT because it is a great rate, and advancement at the moment is really rapid, and outside the Navy that tech experience is really marketable. As long as you can pass the PST no problem it is really not that hard to create a SEAL package whether your'e in bootcamp, A school, or even your first command. As long as your'e squared away, and respectful (and determined) you should have no problem getting help to go to BUDS. I would concentrate on getting a good rate like IT because chances are that is what you are going to be doing. Good luck

Diggi, as for ET or AT judging from what you seen the people doing in thoose rates does it seem to be jobworthy in the civilian world?thanks.

Just curious PlatinumMike, what did you end up doing?
Just a small suggestion as a Navy mom. Pick a job that you believe you will enjoy doing if for some reason you do not make it through BUD/s. Even if your plan is to be a SEAL, things happen. Be prepared.

Thanks for asking Court. As of now the Chief told me to wait till this monday, in which he'll give me a call as of what jobs are available. I have a feeling he's just gonna call me back and tell me the same jobs that he told me 2 weeks ago.

Ok platinumike, first let me say Hooyah on your desicion to join the navy. I am not a recruiter, but I do know you should be able to take your asvab again. They even have prep courses to help you improve your score. Now for you young guys that do find your way up here to great lakes, look me up. When you get out of boot and go to your respective A schools ask where BEQ 632 is and walk over there and ask for FC2. If you are goin QM you will be coming to me anyway. I am a BDO/SNATD instructor and a SWCC candidate, if your goin IT your Barracks is right next door. I will not be going to BUDS for at least a 6 months to a year( orders are a pain to get out of sometimes). I can also answer some general questions you may have.

Wow, glad to have your reply An2mal. I dont wana leave civlilian life without being satisifed with the job or rate ill be known as in the Navy. Right now I really want IT or ET. Can I really take the asvab again? It seems like its a strict rule.
