I have just stumbled on to a problem that could end my Navy carrerre before it starts. When I was 17 I was put on anti deppressents not alot 10mg smallest dose i believe for 3 months. Anyway I just read The Warrior Elite and one member of 228 was given the boot from training due to failing a Psych test. Now this history prevents me from joining the navy for 1 year and thats a good thing. however will this immediatly DQ me from training. It wasn't that serious and i was NEVER close to suicide My doctor kept pushing this for some reason. Just a bump in the road worrying about college auditions. Music colleges Berklee, Manhattan etc.. Any info would be a GREAT HELP. Ive read a couple posts on this topic but am still in the dark on this.

Went back and re-read the Warrior Elite and the Evaluation is to weed out those with pathological tendencies. looks like i'm in the clear on this one.

I trained at North West Jiu Jitsu Club My instructor was Brian Johnson. The School is awsome but I have had to take time off for College. I really intend to focus on getting good grades I had a crappy as hell High school experiance. Where did you go to college?

Went to the University of Ca, RIverside. THought about transferring to Berklee (in boston) but since I'm starting graduate school (knew I would) in architecture, a "pure" music education wouldn't have worked out too well.

Ew. The 909.....

Riverside, home of miles and miles.....of miles and miles.

And to the original post, from what I can tell (not a btdt) the psych eval basically is there to make sure you arent a total jackass. I mean, you gotta be a little crazy to do the job...

What's up with all the band geeks that want to become SEALs?

Just wanted to throw my music hat in the ring.
Came down to Navy or college back in the day.
Got accepted to Berklee, parents flat said "no", moved to S.D., to "find myself", had the Navy itch ever since. Now at 27, its gonna be scratched!

I know its off topic, but maybe not. Is there a psychological connection between musicians/artists and what it takes to become a SEAL?
Any real-deals or fellow wanna-be's out there play? What's your take?

I think that Musicians and artists who have that inner drive to go to a music based or other arts based college have that burning desire to push themselves. The general idea of BUD/S that I have gotten is the people who make it strive not only for succes but advancement. The ability to keep going and always knowing you can do better. I personaly have always had the attitude in anything I do to take the harder route. Lots of musicians I know play simple songs with simple chords. When I heard guys like Joe Satriani Steve Vai Paul Gilbert and Yngwie I knew this was my style. My friends called me crazy they wouldn't attempt to learn the simplest songs from these guys. I understand this music is intemidating but so is BUD/S and its that ability to say BRING IT! with all your might.

I can't qualify the answer I am about to give but from what I know of Psych eval (which is what friends/family have explained to me) is that it is as you said your self, a Pathological psych exame. As far as I can tell they are looking for people with excessive bad habits with alcohol, drugs, and tobacco and such, since i would assume any of this would greatly affect an individuals training and their attitude towards it.

When you say psych evaluation are you talking about the lie detector?

I'm not sure if they actually give a polygraph in indoc during the pathological psych eval or any other time before BUD/S. I found this article on usmilitary.about.com (i have found a lot of useful information on this site by the way) about how the DoD gives polygraphs

http://usmilitary.about.com/cs/generalinfo/a/security2_4.htm

It sounds like a polygraph is mostly used for investigative purposes, so it may be a hassle for them to give one to every trainee for a pathological eval (although i guess someone could be a pathological liar...), but read the whole article, it is mostly about getting security clearances but it may provide some insight to you, and i hope it helps. I'm going to keep browsing the usmilitary.about.com site to see if I can find anything more specific to the BUD/S psych eval.
