Hi, I got a question on the Navy, or the form of pushups that will be required at BUD/S. Do they check for how much your hands are spread apart? Because When my hands are spread about a yard apart , pushups are easy as pie(even up to 50 or so) I guess this way is using your chest muscles. When My hands are about a lil more than shoulder width apart, they are harder and i can pull off about 40 or so. My question is do they care how far apart your hands are? and does your chest need to touch the ground after every single rep? or is it just bent elbows at 90*? Also, another thing I have is when im doing pushups, I noticed in the mirror that my lower back and butt tend to drop down when im doing pushups, and doesnt look like a nice strait pushup :-|

Well, that's not really god, you have to work on keeping you back and butt in a straight line. Try doing pushups very slowly, and correcting the possition as you do it. In other words, go up to the mirror and do a push up, then correct that pushup as you bend the elbows, continue to make corrections until you have a perfectly straight back and butt. It all gets easier from there!

Alright, your hands have to be either shoulder width apart, or a little bit past. I think you're right with the pushup stance that has your hands 1 yard apart.

Well, you have to go down enough so that your elbows form the 90 degree angle, but for training it is better if you can make your chest touch the ground (it adds arm strength and endurance) also a good thing to do to help you get more push ups is, when you drop down on your pushup, hold your chest about 1 inch from the ground for about 5-10 seconds each, this burns like crazy but the next time you do pushups you'll notice a difference in the number you can acchieve, and that you're arms aren't near as tired as they were earlier.

Also lifting weights isn't bad either.

I hope this helped. I started off only able to do abut 55 (in 2 minutes), but now I'm up in the 100-120s range before I can't do any more. Remember, you have to do the exercises to get better, good luck with your goal!

anybody see the hist channel's class 234 the past few days? the instructors had their recruits doing a type of push up called "chasing rabbits". you might want to practice those because odds are you'll be doing lots of those...

Yeah I saw that too...extremely interresting. Also that is a very good point, that would be wise to do those. For those who haven't seen the doc, its pretty much you being in a push up position, with your back bent upward, and swivelling your hips and placing them infront of you. Fair warnin, these things BURN, with a massive B. Excellent endurance work out, try doing 50 the first time you do them, it is very hard.

At the PST, typically, they have your partner make their hand into a fist and put it on the deck below your chest and you have to touch their hand at the bottom of every rep.

chasing the rabbits is just mountain climbers, on one video, they make lively chase the rabbits for not telling the instructers he didn't have enough ammunition for the excercise in land warfare.

Basically, you go into the leaning-rest (aka the up part of the pushup) and alternate bringing each knee to your chest...Left, Right, Left, Right.... You look like you are trying to climb a steep hill while on hands and knees.

Make sense?

if the instructors are making you do chasing rabbits, the real lesson to learn is this: the instructors have you targeted, so you need to pull your act together better. that's what they're trying to get you to do and if you don't, they'll pour it on all the more...

i believe in bud/s they do a variety of pushups. normal, wide, tricep and dive bomber. and in a pst the fist thing doesnt cut it, you gotta touch your chest to the floor.

Yes, they are also called mountain climbers...you're in the pushup position with your butt in the air as little as possible, legs bent at the knees, alternating bringing your feet towards your head...that's how we did them in the Marines (I'm sure they're done the same at BUD/s)...if you're "swiveling" your hips back and forth than you are cheating and not doing them right...about the same difficulty as say flutterkicks...and if you're worrying about putting your hands in a specific spot or an inch or two farther apart or closer together while doing pushups?...then you need to stop worrying about such small details...diamond pushups, (approx) shoulder width pushups, and wide, meaning wide, pushups are what you need to do...

I've taken many PST's here at BUD/S. They don't use a fist method or anything like that. They don't check how far your arms are spread either. For the PST you just have to break 90 degrees. There are plenty instructors hovering over everyone to make sure you go down far enough. They will start you over if you aren't doing them right. Seen it happen. Every other time you do pushups they want chest to deck. Chasing Rabbits sucks. They will scream "feet to hands" at you. Thats how they want them. Its more of a leg workout though.
