I'm probably going to take some flack for this but I was kind of curious how Marine Force Recon compares to SEALs. (I notice that they aren't even on the ask a Warrior list.) I'm in NROTC right now but I considered going Marine option until I found out only sailors can become SEALs.

I tossed that same option around for quite a while before it all came down to this: Recon is not part of JSOC so there for do not get the funding and do not operate unless the marine corps sends them in because regular forces are in need of recon support. In other words you wont really get to operate at all unless we are at war and they send the marines. I have talked to several people who were recon and left to go into SEALs or Air force Combat Controllers because they weren't getting any operational time in the marines. Anyway its food for thought.

good point. however due to the national security act of 194x not sure of the year) marines could deploy without congress. this leaves the option open for froce recon to work with the DEA in south america or similar operations.

when i was attached to the 24'th marine expeditionary unit in the boat company with the *** ault platoon (we were riflemen) we constantly worked with the SEAL platoon on the 6 month work-up and NEVER did i get to see the recon guys so i wont know much about them.
