I do not know a whole lot about the test called "Drown Proofin" that students have to take during BUD/S.. How long do they have to hold their breath in order to pass?

I could be wrong, but this is what I have heard from reliable sources -

THE FOLLOWING IS DONE WITH HAND TIED BEHIND BACK, FEET TIED TOGETHER, NO GOGGLES, NO AIR TANK-

No time limit on breath holding. They throw you in and you have to keep from passing out for a half an hour. This requires several bobs off the bottom of the pool up to the surface to get a quick breath before submersing again. You then have to retrieve your face mask off the bottom of the pool with your teeth after the half hour is up. You also have to be able to "UNDULATE", not to be mistaken with Ovulate ;) , for 25 or 50 meters I believe. Sound kind of creepy, I can't wait :) .

God bless bud.

No problem bud. Read "Meeting God Behind Enemy Lines" Steve Watkins, Great book, christian testamony to a US Navy SEAL. He talks about how he trained for drown proofing. And how they made him do the 4 mile run w/ a mouth full of sand! lol, you gotta love the instructors.

You dont really hold your breath on drownproofing. When you bob up and down your just doing prolongrd exhaling as you sink to the bottom, your feet touch and you kick off the bottom, your head breaks the surface take a quick breath so you can exhale to go back down again. Then you float where you arch your back over and when you need a breath you just lift your head for a breath and then lean forward again to continue floating, then you "dolphin" swim and bob again and retrieve mask with teeth. The whole test is about one thing: making sure you are comfortable in the water under any circumstances - even the most extreme circumstances. And at the same time it teaches you basic water survival skills that could save your life one day...

Appreciate it doug, I'll be printing off this thread so I can prep before BUD/S. By the by, how long is each part? Instance - How long must you bob, how long must you do the arch back float, how long must you do the undulation? All at one time?
Thanks

Make sure you are not alone when doing this!!!
(I think you should wait untill BUDS to try this)
It can be very hazardous to copy an exercise when you donīt have properly trained people to help you if something goes wrong.
Again, canīt speak for the SEALs but in our baracks these things are never done without another diver standing by should something go wrong.

Advice noted and appreciated. I wasn't planning on doing this alone, although if I was I would take heed to your advice anyways. Although I think my head is too thick to listen to the "wait until BUD/S" portion (just playin w/ you). I might do a safer version. Maybe just hold my feet together and hands behind my back w/out the rope and "mock" drown proof (in case of operator error, I can just reach out). Or maybe light string so my hands will stay in place unless in an emergency.
