Work, work, work.
Also, concentrate the NUMBER of sets you do, rather than the reps. If you can do 3 sets of 20 reps with a minute rest between each set, then try doing 5 sets of 15 reps for a while. When that gets too easy, try doing 4 sets of 20 reps. Eventually, you'll be able to handle more and more reps just because of the sheer number of pushups you're doing.
Keep at it each day.

Hey man all you have to do is practice them, this sounds dumb i know but it totally worked for me. I started out doing 10 reps for a while like 3 weeks then i was able to both move up in a reps and sets to 15, now i am doing 20. If you practice them enough you just seem to get the hang of it, this sounds retarted i know but its like anything else, the more you practice the better you will get at them. Jesus....i sound like my Dad....BOOM! (A lone gun shot rings throughout)

Bart,
Sounds good. For everyone out there who is trying to increase their push-up limit, just remember not to chince on the pushups. Make them good ones - down to within 3-4 inches of the ground, then back up all the way. Legs together, arms shoulder-width apart. They're a LOT tougher than people think.
Just thought I'd add that commment.

Just make sure you dont go insane with pushups like i did i was doing about 300 pushups in 12-15 min and i guess it was just too much cause ive been unable to do ANYTHING for almost 3 months now but almost ready to get back in it. Reason being your shoulder is a ball and joint type just clench one of your fist then cup your other one then put it over the top of your clenched fist and in between there is fluid to move it around nice and smooth. Well i was doing so many pushups combined with pull ups and dips and swimming that well eventually that fluid was gone and now i cant do squat so just some warning . Anyways build up slow always add atleast one if you can and in no time you will be were ever you wanna be. And also get good at just lying there in push up position i do low mids and highs i usually just hang there for about 15 sec each i do it once for every set i do at the end of the set. The mids will make your arms shake nice and good after about your 5th set.

Bench press will do the same thing, throw out your rotator cuff (cup or cuff?). Anyways, a former marine recon I am friends with always gives me great advice, he says this to me -
Patience is a virtue, a virtue is a grace, stick with a grace, and it will put a smile on your face.
This man is crazy, and smart, and INTIMIDATING AS HELL. You ought to try the PT schedual on this site, worked for me.
when you do push ups you should hold when you are down for just a few seconds for more effect

other than building strength in certain areas, what other importance do pushups have? also other than getting ready to do the ridiculous amount you are required of at BUD/S

Do you mean specific tasks? Like to help you stablize a pistol while shooting it? Or do you mean in general?

Diesel>> You have great use of upperbody strength during a (for example) Under Water Navigationswimm, while dragging a hostage out of hostile terrain, while dragging and/or lifting a teammate to safety.........
But I suspect your question wasn´t so sincere, so I won´t bother answer..

I'll tell you the truth about push-up and any other exercise! Variety my friend VARIETY! Try a wide grip, close grip and diamond pushups, with each grip 4 sets of 15. The next day put your feet in a incline position( on you couch, chair, steps) 3-4 sets of 15. Next day your hands are on the steps instead of your feet. Next day do as many as you can in 2 min. Then the next day try to do as many as you can with each grip. Take two days off and next week increase the reps.

Actually, I was pretty serious. I figured that doing isolated excercises would be a better idea than doing pushups. Then again we'd have to do so many pushups for BUD/S that I thought that was one importance. And another was just to build general upper body strength.

and low crawling....
and getting in and out of the prone position quickly...
and working in buildings ( in and out of windows, climbing ropes/ladders ) ...
etc.,...
Cold steel,
try this one
max pushups in one minute, one minute rest, max pushups in 45 sec, 45 sec rest, max pushups in 30 sec
when that gets easy, start at either 1min 30sec, or try and go back up the pyramid, ie 30 sec, 45 sec, 1min
don't forget to warm up and stretch
there's also some good workout plans and a couple of good articles on fitness at www.specialtactics.com
