Digem,
Since you had posted that you're stationed at Coronado, can you comment on the surf temp. out there now ? I live in New England; surf was 67"F in summer here. Not bad on a hot, sunny day boogie boarding with my kids, but sittin' in it at 0300 after being sleepless for a few days would be another story, freeze your nuts off in no time, I'm sure. Seems like a part of training that neither strength nor skill would get you through, only will power. Also, do you Team guys stationed there get to "encourage" the newbies coming into BUD/S ? BTW, thanks for so many of your clear and concise responses to a lot of questions posted here.

cold, cold and cold. :)

yep and thats a big reason why the training is mostly mental rather than physical.

Some guys may mess with them a little bit, but CA Team guys are not instructors so it stays at a minimum. A good amount of guys turn out for the Hell Week festivities though. :)

cold, cold and cold. :)
The water temp today on the San Diego Bay is 62F 17.2C. Waves are 1-3 feet at 13 second intervals. But, alas, there is noone enjoying hell week this week. Next on is around mid-Nov? Is that right Digem? I'll make sure to post the water temp, weather and surf for you guys for the next hell week. And remember, next one isn't even considered the "winter" class.

Digem, Courtney,
Thank you both for your responses. 62'F is COLD ! Especially if you're just sitting or lying down in it, not body surfing or swimming.
Ross,
I live in western MA, 20 miles out of Springfield, beginning of the Berkshires. Any SEALS in the area ? ? I'll buy the beers just to pick your brain about your experiences - this is fascinating stuff.
Digem,
Are civilians ever allowed on base to view BUD/S? Thanks again folks for such timely replies,
Tom

Damn. Sounds like Courtney did her own little SUROBS report. For the uneducated, SUROBS means SURf OBServation report. Your supposed to do one every morning and they are also used for reconnaissance. I won't elaborate on it here because its pretty boring stuff, but for the wanna-bes, don't worry - at BUD/S you will be able to practice many, many SUROBS reports - just try not to fall asleep during class. The bucket of water you have to stick your head in (when you fall asleep in class) is awfully cold.

Not typically. Prior to 9/11 there was not security as tight as now, so civies could usually stroll along the beach right on to the NSWC area with no problems. Now the security is a lot tighter, so unless you have good connections or a very valid reason, civies are USUALLY not allowed in. But rock portage is done on the rocks out front of the Hotel Del Coronado. The area is taped off, but civilians are welcome to stand on the edge of the tape and view the training for that.

I was with the Chief Recruiter for Worcester today and as of today, Buddy is back motivating full time and currently starting up another workout program. If you can't get ahold of him try calling the Worcester office, they will have info on his whereabouts..
