How long should i be able to hold my breath underwater for? right now i can do 1:15. Iam hoping to get it up to about 2 minutes by the time i leave for the Navy(which is after highschool. In july) Is it possible for me to make this improvement? Also. What is the preffered or average ammount of underwater breathholding time that a SEAL or Tadpole would have? Question #2- How long should I be able to run comfortably without stopping. Right now i can run 2 1/2- 3 miles comfortably, w/out stopping. I know the warning order has 6 miles a week at the last week. Should i be able to run 6 non stop? or what..?

It is possible to make such improvement, you can actually practice holding breath and slowly increase your time day by day. Try to hold your breath at home while checking the clock, then record your time on paper and see if you do better from previous days. Do it only ONCE A DAY though, not letting oxygen into your brain damages your brain cells and that isn't good, doesn't really have a huge effect on you even if you do it 3 times a day but what's the rush? And the key to it is to relax, try not think of the clock or how long you've been holding your breath for, just go to your happy place and you'll get much better time.

Here is one of those common misconceptions people have. I'll try to clear it up for you here. It does not matter how long you sit there and hold your breath for. Can you hold your breath while swimming 50 meters underwater (a LOT different than passive breath holding). Can you hold your breath, go about 12 feet or so underwater and tie knots while maintaining your depth (without floating back up to the surface)? Can you be diving and suddenly have your supply of air cut off and maintain your composure while fixing your gear to return to normal activity? These are the skills that are necessary. Breath holding is not a big deal that you guys need to practice. All the underwater tests at BUD/S are just about remaining calm under situations in the water. It is not about having an outrageously high breath holding capacity.

The more you run, the longer you will be able to go without stopping. Just do it everyday and make sure that every day you run, go just a little bit further than the previous day. If you do that, you will always improve . It's not about being "comfortable." Push yourself. Don't stop just because you have a side sticker or are tired. Run, run, run. Good luck.

That's a good point you have about the difference between breath holding and the 50 meter swim that you have to do. But I would like to know if there is any thing you can do to get better at doing this under water swim. I am able to go 25 meters now but I can only do it one time a day because when I try it again my distance gets cut in half.
If you know of any techniques that can help me and anyone else that has this same question that would be cool.
Thank You

hah.. i forgot about this topic. Ya my times have defintely improved last week, i ran 4 miles in 31 minutes. Its still not so great, but for me its an improvement. The swimming i still need a little help on. Nitsuj, i finish H.S. in June, right now the recruiter i have, doesnt know much, he hardly even cares about me signing up. He has called me once, iam always calling him, and when i talk to him, he just hurrries the talking and hangs up, that and he has already told me false info.I wana sign up now, i just wish i could get a new recruiter...
