View Full Version : Indoc....what should I expect?

I'll be in Class 250 at the end of January. I was wondering about Indoc. I read in the FAQ about showing up in a sqared away uniform (and I most definitely intend to). But I was wondering what the specifics are for the 5 week Indoc period. What are the PTs like? Do you train in utilities, and then get your gear issued before you class up for actual BUD/S training?

Will there be sea-bag inspections (i.e. should I have a complete seabag with me, or can most of my extra things be left at my appartment in San Diego)? Should I arrive on the date specified on my orders (January 24th), or should I show up a few days early?

Anyone out there going through indoc right now?

Thanks in advance for any answers. I just want to be as prepared as possible for when I show up.

What are the PTs like?

They get you prepared for the PT's in 1st Phase. Although it is true that the daily PT's get harder as you go through training, that does not mean these are easy. It is very difficult. They must get harder as you go through training as you are getting stronger and need to continually challenge your body and mind.

The PT in indoc is also to help you get familiar with the PT's before you phase up. So you know the commands in log pt, you know how to properly do push-ups, sit-ups, etc. Then when you start first phase, the entire class knows what to do when they are told to do something so there should be no slow-poking around. Indoc is just that - indoc - to prepare you for Phase 1.

Do you train in utilities, and then get your gear issued before you class up for actual BUD/S training?

You will get all of your stuff issued to you within the first day or two from the date you check-in on the quarterdeck. For those 2 or 3 days, you are not training. You do a lot of hurry up and wait. Run around the base (both sides) getting signatures (checking in) with all the different relevant departments and all. When that is all complete, you should have your issued gear ready to go so you can start training right then.

Will there be sea-bag inspections (i.e. should I have a complete seabag with me, or can most of my extra things be left at my appartment in San Diego)?

Initially, you should bring it all, because they may give you a sea bag inspection if they want to screw with you. Probably not, but why chance it. Once you phase up in first phase, you can leave most of the non-essentials (such as boondockers, dungojams aka dungarees, a few sets of uniforms, etc.) at your off-base apartment. But always have ALL OF your issued gear at the barracks! And keep it all in a prestine condition as possible.

Should I arrive on the date specified on my orders (January 24th), or should I show up a few days early?

The exact date specified on your orders. First thing in the morning. If you show up early, you will be most likely be told to go away plus you will look like an idiot for not following directions.

Thanks in advance for any answers. I just want to be as prepared as possible for when I show up.

No sweat. Good luck. Ill still be watching for you come Hell Week :)

Some info for you about your Indoc... Digem was right about your seabag and all of that. However, you won't get issued your cammis or anything for about a week if you are lucky. You have to get cleared by medical first. This can take a little while sometimes. As for you showing up early, it isn't a big deal at all. You will just start standing watches and it will actually be easier to get medically cleared. But it is your choice.
The indoc period is pretty simple. Learn how to be in phase. From basic IBS commands, surf passage and stuff like that. But you will be the first class in a few years to be going through it with SWCC. So there is no telling what will have to change for that. Have fun

tuckbag - are you a SEAL?

I got cleared by medical my 3rd day there and got my gear that same day. You just have to speak up - stay organized and make **** happen. They will be slow if you don't try to push through. If you push to get it done, they will make it happen for you. At least that has been my experience.

Tell that to some of the instructors that want to see if you can follow simple instructions. If the United States Navy says you are suppossed to be at NSWC on the 18th (simple example), you are still accountable for at your previous command until the 17th. So show up when your orders tell you to. The dates they give you are for a reason, not just pulled out of a hat at random. Certain instructors are real sticklers for ATTENTION TO DETAIL! So don't show up early - follow your ORDERS.
