Hey quake,
Hate to break this to ya man, but it just aired recently- on Labor Day in fact.
I had to venture into the office for a bit, so I missed episodes 4-6, and was wanting to much to find out what happened that I went to discovery.com and had the whole set Fed-Exed to me. It got here Friday and I have already seen it all. Very cool, and worth the bucks if you can buy the set.
On that note, I have a question to all the SEALs out there about this. I was surprised to see this even existed. I had heard discussion here before about the SEAL special on Discovery, but I thought everyone was just talking about the one hour overview they run every now and then. I was not aware something this detailed had been made until last Monday.
What do you guys think about that? If you had been there as a student or instructor at the time, do you think you would have wanted to be on camera like that? Seems like such a personal thing is all.- training I mean. Not to mention the fact it kinda blows your cover down the road. I am willing to bet many of our enemies watch all of this stuff to see how the military works- not good for trainees captured on tape whose faces might be remembered IMHO.

the LESS press involved with SEALs the better...

I have to agree with you wetwash. That goes for not only the SEALs but for the military in general and before someone makes the comment about it, I understand the reasoning behind pubic relations especially in this time of war for our country and the support for our military that is generated by shows like this. Just look at the recent recruiting commercials for the Navy. They either picture a group of SEALs or a bunch of F-18's on a carrier. That is great, only that those comprise less than one percent of our Navy. They arent to quick to show footage of a Yeoman pushing papers who wanted to join the Navy to be a diver and it "didn't work out for them" or for the "deck seaman" who came in under an open contract. There is a reason why units like the SEALs and others in the SpecWar Community have been in the dark for so long, it is because that is where they want to be and where they do their best work. No one goes to the Special Forces/Warfare side of the military hoping to one day be on Discovery or be the next prototype of a G.I. Joe doll. They do it because it is a calling to special people who want to do special certain things and don't care if they get a friggin medal at the end of it. Yes I too watched the show on Discovery and found it to be very interesting since i am not a SEAL and was curious about the notorious BUD/S training i had heard so much about while in the Marines but also as a former member of the community it would have been fine by me if there never would have been a show on Discovery and just the look in the eye and non-verbal nod of the head from one warrior to another in passing knowing that i respect what they do and they respect what i do is all that really matters to me. I cannot comment for others but i do not think i am the minority in my thinking. I do think however, this site is a wonderful tool to be used by those who are of like mind and regard the community with the level of respect it deserves, be the users past, present or future warriors or just friends and family. I would much rather have my questions answered or ideas criticized in a forum like this than get my answers from a program that no matter how well done it was, was still edited for T.V......Take care and God Bless
P.S. ...When i use the term "Warrior", that means it crosses lines between branches of service and types of units....after all no matter if you are a SEAL, Recon, Ranger, CCT, PJ, Delta, SF or just a grunt we are all one of America's Warriors. We each may have our specialties but we are Warriors all the same. SEMPER FI.

Well said!
I liked the programs as well and am glad I have them, but I have to confess that after all the books and research I did not really learn anything new from this program. Sure it was cool to see it live and in action, but I would not claim that it contained any information above and beyond what an outsider could learn from more open and honest sources.
The main reason I asked about this is I remember in "Rogue Warrior" that Marcinko said he was used in a Navy recruiting poster while he was in Vietnam. Apparently copies of that poster were spread among the VC quite quickly and Marcinko quickly became a VIP target for the Cong with a bounty on his head that would have been quite a princely sum for any Vietnamese who saw him and turned over information on his location to the VC.
Ever since reading about that, I cringe a bit when I see this much openness about SEAL training. You are right about the PR side of things, but at what cost does the public get their free peek?

I would LOVE to see this series!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I went to discovery and saw how much it would cost and it's $39.99 I'm getting married this Saturday!!! woooooooo-hooooooo!!! A.K.A.
I'M BROKE!!!!! Is this coming on again any time soon???? I sure hope so! This is a long shot but I'll ask anyways. Would any of you that actually have the series be willing to let me borrow it if I pay for all shipping cost? I'm a minister if that helps you trust me any more. I'll return the series ASAP, I just REALLY want to see it so bad and I don't have enough money to buy it. For those of you who did buy it off of discovery how long did it take to actually come in??? How much was it total after all taxes and shipping cost? I live in Dallas,Texas so if any of you guys or gals can help I would reeeaaaalllllllly appreciate it!!!!!!! Thanks and God bless!!!!!

To your question, "would I want to be on camera during my Training". Well, no.
But be aware that the Discovery Executives that sought out the filming of the BUDS series probably had permission from the HQ, Naval Public Information Office (Or, what ever they call it these days). In turn, it would be passed down to NSW as a request (read, directive) to allow many civilians onto the Strand for many weeks to film numerous segmets of BUDS training. A civilian filming crew would not just show up and sprinkle sparkle in the eyes of NSW and start filming.
Not realizing there is a legal document called a "Rights Release" when filming or photographing for commercial use, it is very possible the trainees and instructors had no say in the matter of allowing the film crews to film.
And there was possibly 3 times as much film was exposed than what was seen on Discovery. Only the clips that appeared interesting to Discovery was aired.
As Wetwash alludes to, less is better. But media publicity is a high priority with HQ, PIO and the Recruiting Service. And the guy at the end of the chain, the Instructors and trainees have little or no say in the matter.
