Good Evening,

I recently purchased "Jarhead" by Anthony Swofford. It was a solid book, my question goes as follows. Does the Suveillance and Target Aquisition/ Scout Snipers platoons still exist? I understand that some commanders questioned their use doing that time frame (late 80's, early 90's). I understand the need for Scout/ Snipers and their physcological value on the battlefield. I also understand that not all members of this platoon are division trained snipers (at least not initailly) so this would suggest they are taught within the unit, but are they really refered to as "Pigs" rather than "hogs". Is there a certain amount of resentment between STA Marines and traditional S/S?

a humble bow and with all respect,

Lee

They are refered to as Scout sniper platoons now, STA platoons had electronics suvalence teams in them, witch no longer are with SSP.
But yes Scout snipers are much active in the marine corps. You go throu some training with your platoon then you get sent out to a division school to obtain the 8541 MOS.
