Just wondering from all of you BTDT's out there what your favorite gun was while you were serving, I'm just wondering because the only thing I have right now is a pellet gun and a paintball gun, and you guys got to mess around with the REAL stuff, :D LOL.
Thanks.

Because I'm a big guy, I got to carry the M60 (and later the 240) when I got to Batt. My preferrred weapon of choice though was the SOPMOD M4

It did everything it was supposed to do and then some.

My favorite by far would be the Ultimax 100.

If it were my decision I would replace the M249 with this weapon. It is 5.56mm X 45mm and about half the weight of the M249. It is "the lightest MG in the world." It has a greatly reduced recoil and what little recoil it does have comes straight back. The weapon feels like it controls itself with very little effort from the shooter. It also uses a 100 round spiral drum which make absolutely silent when carried. It's just a superb weapon that no amount of talk can describe...you just have to fire the thing.

A gun is a tool, which one is favourite Should be which is favourite for a given task.

F.N Fal was my first issue rifle, got a special place in my heart :) , Like wise the Gustav (first subgun) and the Browning Hi-power (first sidearm)

Favourite assault rifle would have to go to the Styre AUG. Best way to end a stalk is the AI96. Want me to kick down a door then you better give me a suppressed MP5. Tacticle side arm I would likely stick with the USP in .45 or BAP in 9mm

Which kinda BTDT you askin? In my experience, the weapon they issued me usually was the best for me. I carried an M-14 with full auto. I did get an AK, had it for about a week, then THEY took it away from me. Said they needed them in CONUS for training. Having said all that, I'll bet I didn't fire my personal weapon more than 6 times in country. My job was to call in Arty. I was always on the radio.LOL

How big were you? How strong and big should I be to be a 60 or SAW gunner?

Don't worry about bein big. In Battalion, they usually take the littlest guys and make 'em hump the biggest weapons. Logic being: every Ranger, regardless of size, must be able to carry any weapon.

You'll most likely start out as an Assistant Gunner, carrying spare barrels and Ammo. Learning how to replace barrels and feed ammo without chinking it up. Besides, you'll carry the M240B, which is a tad lighter than the 60. Battalion doesn't use the 60 anymore, except on training like in Ranger School. You're lucky... it SUCKED changing out a red-hot barrel with those asbestos gloves, under fire. You'll LOVE being a SAW gunner though. 800 rounds of F-U-C-K YOU UP per minute, and you're the only one responsible for it.

Check out the book "To Be A U.S. Army Ranger" by Russ Bryant. Russ is the best friend of a good friend of mine, and was former 1st Batt. His book is bad ***, and there are a couple pictures of me in there. You can get it in the Military history section of any Barnes and Noble or Border's. It's about $24. I STRONGLY suggest you buy it. It covers everything from Basic Training, to RIP, to Ranger School, to everyday life in a Battalion.

Here's the link from Amazon.com: (cut-and-paste into a new browser)

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0760313148/qid=1063372314/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_1/104-8172009-9870341?v=glance&s=books&n=507846

By the way... on Amazon.com you can buy the book used... I know you'd wind up spending $7 more for a new one.. but it would really help Russ out if you bought it new. He doesn't recieve any royaltys from you buying a used book. However... I understand you're a High School cat, so however you wanna get it is groovy. Just thinkin about my bud.

Still waiting on that Phone #. I don't bite... much.

AH1-G, just about any configuration, 17lb rockets for hard tagets, combined with two miniguns up front worked well:

Flechettes also served their purpose:

Haha! I read that book every time I go to Barnes and Noble, that exact same one. I just haven't had the money to buy it yet, so every time I'd go there I'd read a little bit each time, so far I've just read the part past Benning Phase of Ranger School! But now that you mention it I might buy it.

Sir, I have to say that I truly like what I do, but if I had my choice of doing anything else in this military it would have to be flying one of those fancy attack helicopters. Hell, I'd be just as happy to be the weapons officer.

I don't know what their count was.LOL I did blow up alot of jungle and I would say my monkey count was in the thousands.LOL Oh, I also got myselfe 2 water bo's. Cost the outfit though, we had to pay for them. I would say it was good eating nut there wasn't enough left.

Cap,
Sir, Im with Jake on that. I was always jealous of the slick pilots cause they got to fly where it was cool, sleep on a dry cot and got at least 2 hots a day. Life always looks greener on the other side.LOL

Hehe. I was refering to slick cause they were the only ones to land. You guys were always buzzin around "up there". Hey, I met some pretty durn good Dust Off pilots, they were as crazy as you guys. Maybe even crazierLOL.
Remember, to the grunt; slick= water, hot chow(sometimes) and dry socks. and mail. We loved ya all, cept when ya blew our "homes" down.LOL

I loved the Dust Off pilots:

I spent most all my time flying in the Delta (some in Cambodia), our tactics were to stay low level, and sometimes climb to 300 ft AGL for a target attack:

Cap,

It's funny how life is. When we were humpin the I Corps, we felt the whole war was bein won Up North.LOL everything down "South" (included the other 3 Corps areasLOL) was just Little stuff. And we were pretty arrogant about it. Musta had something to do with OPCON to 3rd Marines. Now, as I have learned what went on down "South", I am humbled. Comes back to, it was a team effort. Heck, I had never even heard of SEALs or Rung Sat. I figured you guys were always hangen out in Vung Tau and swimming in pools.

My favorite "GUN" was the #1 gun in the #2 Turret of the BB New Jersey. My favorite Rifle was the M-14 and my favorite Pistol was the 1911A-1 .45 (runner up is the MK II Ruger .22 with MK II Suppressor)

If you're going to ask questions like this.....at least get your terminology correct.

I didn't know you were in Russ's book. I just gave the last copy I had to a sniper from 3/75 who didn't have one of his own. He was BBFH's platoon Sgt some time back.

I didn't either, 'til I was looking through it with my brother and he goes "DAMN... that ugly guy looks familiar"... and he was right... I am ugly.

It's not a big deal... there are tons of good pics in there of better Rangers than me. A lot of those pics are older pics from when Russ would take pics of certain things we'd do. He got some good pics of 1st and 2d Batt as well.

There's one pic in there of a Ranger lying down with an I.V. in his arm. If you look on his shirt, it says "Grainger" on it. Grainger was a good friend of me and BBFH. If you saw he or I, you saw Grainger.

Now I'm not military or anything but my favorite firearm has to be a..... 38 caliber K-frame pistol. The best rifle has to be a Romanian AK-47 assault rifle. Subgun is definitly a MP5A3. Just my opinion.
