This is my first post on the this list, so if I step out of line somewhere give me a heads up. Also, I apologize in advance for the length of this post. I want responders to have an accurate picture of where I am coming from before they fire off a knee jerk response.
If it is alright with the moderators, I would like the responses from this post to come from either current SEALs or current SEAL wives. I would have posted this discussion in the SEAL family forum, but I was not sure how many current SEALs visit there. The reason I am posting this question here rather than immediately going to a recruiter, is because I understand salesmanship. (I want the opinion of the person currently driving the car, not the dealer trying to sell the car.)
I will be 27 in January. During my short time on this earth I have always thought that special forces was something I was designed to do, right body type, right hobbies and interests. However, I am near sighted and up until recently I understood that to be an immediate disqualification. (I have just recently seen the postings on LASIKs and PRK and spoke with the BUD/S medical staff directly on this one.) Even though I have a four year degree, my understanding is that there are more slots for enlisted men at BUD/S and if one enters as an enlisted they are able to take advantage of the SEAL challenge contract, which gives you better chance of getting a slot at BUD/S.
Currently I make alot of money, but I also spend a lot of money. The earliest that I could have my bills paid down to where I could afford to live off an enlisted man's salary would be June of 04'. That makes me 27.5 yrs old, before I can even enlist. (I am in pretty good shape, but using that time to build myself up physically will help my odds of making it through as well.)
Many of the postings that I see on this sight refer to to the fact that the less waivers you have, the better. On the Family forum I see postings about current guys waiting 10.5 months just to get into BUD/S. The odds of me being over 28 by the time I received my orders to BUD/S after Boot camp, and A school are pretty high. That means it is likely that I would be looking at 2 waivers just to get into the program. If there are as many guys lining up for the program as it sounds like there are, what are the odds of my packet getting over looked because I have two waivers?
I would hate to have a life long dream be made available, then find out that I am realistically a year to old.
Thanks for any attention in this matter.
