Ok , I tried checking past stuff, and did a search for this thinking it was a pretty generic question, but no dice!

My brother-in-law gave me his old pt gear(shoe size just happens to be the same), and I want to train in the boots and run on sand. My question is, should I just wait for this in BUD/s or should I try and get the most training under my belt in boots on the sand. Thanks guys

Yes. Run in the sand as much as possible and try and improve your times.

running extensivly on hard ground in boots is bad for you body. The reason being that they dont absorb the shock of all your body weight hitting the ground when you run. In BUD/s they use different boots, Bates, that are more like running shoes. Personally I suggest just running on the sand in your running shoes, great exercise, or in the boots on the sand after a month or so in sneakers, if you must. Though I believe running shoes is all you really need to get prepared.. a real deal could prob give you better advice.. try the ask a SEAL if you dont get an answer on here

Rock,

Per Stew Smith who is a ex-SEAL, you need to run in boots and fatigues at least three months prior to getting to BUD/s, he goes further and states that you should be able to run 4 miles in 28 min or less wearing fatigue pants and boots prior to your arrival. Regarding the types of boots at BUD/s they issue Bates 924's the are a lighter boot which are comfortable and light weight I like them better then my running shoes now that they are broken in.
Regarding swim fins, just thought I'd throw this in Stew Smith also reccomends swimming with fins at least 3 months prior to arriving at BUD/s to strengthen your ankles and hip flexors and be able to swim at least a mile non stop. The type of fins I use are IDI powerfins wich I believe are similar to the ones issued at BUD/s, I bought them of of getfitnow.com, they are good fins, also you will need swim booties for them @ 25.00 a pair.

From what I hear the secret to running in the sand is to shuffle your feet more and to run in the foot prints of the people in front of you, this puts more strain on the calves but is less fatiguing. Also most of your timed runs will occur on the hard pack sand next to the water line. I am not a SEAL but this is info I have recieved from either a SEAL or former SEAL.

Where are you going to bootcamp and what A school are you in. If your A shool is long enough 3 mths or more, I wouldn,t use boots prior to bootcamp. If you are lucky enough to attend A school in San Diego and can find transportation, take a ride across the bridge to Coronado and pt in your boots and in the sand.
