I've been trying to get an age waiver for the SEAL challenge (I'm 32). It was disapproved because I don't have any previous millitary or police experience. If I put in 2 years with the Marines or Army, would I have a better chance of getting approved even though I would be closer to 35. I read the FAQ, but I think this is a little outside that box. Any insight or advice would be appreciated.

Iccabod -

I have a question for thought for you...why do you want to be a SEAL so badly? Is it because you want to serve your country as a warrior and fight for everyone's freedom? Is it your love of diving? Is it the rush of adventure (not a good reason), or what? If you answer that question, you may find another option in the military for you to look at (or maybe even something in civilian life).
You mentioned perhaps joining the Marines or the Army...could you be able to realize your goal(s) through that alone? You could go in and decide to stay. Just a thought.

But to answer your question more directly, it is hard to say. Usually 2 years of Army or Marine Corps Infantry experience does not help a whole lot. I mentioned in the FAQ, if you were about 35 but did have some type of Special Operations background, your chances of getting a waiver approved are greatly increased. Regular Army/USMC experience - of course it COULD help, but not for certain. What do you have to lose though? If your sure you want to push forward, give it a shot. It may get you to BUD/S a few years down the road or it may lead you onto a different path of something you enjoy doing.

I hope this answer helps and is not too confusing. ANy further questions feel free to ask. Good luck......

Thanks for the insight and advice. I will certainly consider all of my options from what you have told me.
