No you dont automatically get E-5. Many guys grad BUD/S as E-2's even. You have to earn your rate in the Navy just like everyone else - advancement exams. You do get a few free points for being a SEAL though since you dont get to work in your rate like the rest of the testing applicants from the fleet.....

Hi there, Chum is not a SEAL...
I certainly don't want to contradict a guy who has been there, but I did read in a packet of info from the recruiter that "upon completion of BUD/s, all graduates will be automatically promoted to E-4"....of course beyond that it is up to you it would seem, but I have also been told (as Doug alluded to above) that SEAL advancement applicants are graded on a curve (one might even call it a steep incline)...but again Doug is infinitely more familiar with the ACTUAL workings of the machine, while I am still studying the schematics!

I believe that some time ago in the Army you had to be a Sargeant to be eligible to become Special Forces, but now I believe anyone can become a green beret.

I don't know if you automatically become a Sargeant, but if you graduate Ranger School you're automatically promoted to Specialist Rank (if you're below that rank to begin with)

I think *but i'm not sure, i'm not a SEAL or a member of the Navy* that you do get promoted to the specialist equivalent rank in the Navy.

Please correct me if I'm wrong someone.

There are many SEALs that are E3..the last class that Graduated had several E2's Graduate. Before you contradict the Real SEALS .. Get your facts straight,.. the name of this thread is Ask A SEAL.

There is no comparing Army with Navy pay grade administration.

With BUDS Class 242, Graduating Feb 7, 2003, of the 42 graduates there were included 8 pay grade E-3, 6 pay grade E-2, and 2 in pay grade E-1.

I have no comment on why there was 2 in pay grade E-1. I took the info from the SEAL Data Base. It was my understanding that upon graduation from Boot Camp promotion to E-2 was automatic. However, I have often been without full explination.

Wazz,

According to the following Navy chart E-1 is not an automatic bump to E-2 after bootcamp. Looks like it can be stretched out to 9mos. time in rate. Since SA is a SEAL source rate and school is only 2 weeks long, I guess at Class 242's graduation is it possible they got to graduation at E-1 with less than 9 months in rate? I don't know, this is just a surmising <g>

Excuse me for adding to this thread: Question - What is the rate/E-? if you enlist with a College degree and an MBA? Can you advance more quickly? Will I hold a higher rank? Thanks..

Thanks for your input. I just did not know the current rating time in grade thing for E-1 to E-2.

Yours is a Navy Recruiter question. If the Board advises you the answer it could be altered by the Navy Recruiter. And it is he that has the ready, factual answer.

well i know when i signed up because of my college credits im a E-3 and because of my college credits i got 3k dollar bonus. so college credits do raise your rating. if you got a mba degree im sure you'll be up there.

Chum is not a SEAL....
I understand what you're saying but it contradicts this other information I've received. I mean it's not something I've just heard through the grapevine, but rather I've seen in a printed document that the Navy publishes that "upon completion of BUD/s all individuals will be automatically promoted to E-4".....
SO.... could it be that the information you guys have been relaying is reflective of the standing of individuals prior to the uniform promotion of all graduates? I'm thinking that, you know, the Navy may be interested in the statistics of what types of persons (e.g., ages/pay rates/job rates, etc.) graduate from the program and therefore may report the status of persons prior to their 'automatically earned promotion'.....
then again delving into the minutia is probably silly since after all no one is ever going to say:

[enter stage left, Johnny and friend Davy]
Johnny: [sarcastically] Yeah, you're a SEAL and that's great, but are you E-3 or E-4?
Davy: [head held low] I'm just a SEAL with E-3 pay rate, man [begins to cry].
Johnny: [pats Davy on back with a consoling air of superiority] It's OK man, it's gonna be alright. Once that promotion comes through so too will the respect.

Anyway, we all know that when you're a SEAL you earn and deserve respect for the high level of personal sacrifice and committment having been made on behalf of this country (among many other things) and earning that respect in the eyes of others, or yourself, doesn't seem to depend on a pay grade but something entirely different.

What is the rate/E-?

It runs from E-1 (the lowest) through E-9 (the highest). There is also E-10 (which is called Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy or MCPON but there is only 1 of them at a time *lol*), so I say E-9 as being the highest. This is for ENLISTED as that is what the "E" is for. Officers run O-1 and up from there. Hope that explains that.....

if you enlist with a College degree and an MBA? Can you advance more quickly? Will I hold a higher rank?

There are a few things that can put you in at a higher rank (rate or paygrade to be more technically correct only Officers hold "rank".) Enough college credits (unsure of exact #) willl get you E-3 out of boot camp as will 3 years or more of JROTC in high school and a few other things may also. usually you will not get a free bump higher than E-3 because when you reach E-4 you are then an NCO (Non-comissioned Officer and that should be earned). Of course prior service military could be a different story as an exception to that. In addition, as I stated earlier you take advancement exams in the Navy to advance so college will not help you directly each time you attempt to advance in rate. I hope this expalined it all..........
