I know this may be dumb to ask, because BUD/S is all atitude and what not, but are you pretty much screwed if you are only about 5"5" and about 140 or so? Are there several other men in the program about this size or anything? I am really thinking about the seal program and everything, but I just have doubts if I can do it because I may not be just as strong as the man beside me. I am just wondering! Thanks ahead for any help!
Hey Nice Guy, I was never a SEAL, but I can tell you one thing.......
YOU CAN DO ANYTHING YOU WANT IF YOU WANT IT BAD ENOUGH........
Your size will NOT be a hinderance unless you let it be......

Yes I will have to go with wetwash on this one. I am not a SEAL yet but I do know a couple and they tell me that it does not matter. If you have the right attitude and the will to get what you want, I say go for it.
Good luck, and maybe I will see you in BUD/s

The SEALS "You give us your mind and we will take care of your body"
Well, size matters according to some girls. *lol* (j/k) Seriously though, you'll be fine at your size. You'll be in the smurf boat crew though...

If you ever catch the Discovery Channel special on BUD/S there is a group put together called the smurf crew, or something like that. They are shorter than the others, but actually looked like they were doing better than them also. So size doesn't matter in BUD/S from what I can see.

Size doesn't matter as long as you pull your weight. And you'll be about the middle of the size of guys there. There will be plenty of taller and shorter guys in training
When I started Class, in a different year, I was taller than WetWash. I was 5'7". But WW was a Porker. I only weighed 129 pounds when I started. I do not know what I weighed when my Class terminated. Eating was not high on the Training schedule. If we reported alive for first muster then the Instructors had done their yesterday's chores and had all these nice bodies to loosen up throughout the forthcoming day and night.
PJ- How much does WW weigh now?

Only if its so big it hinders your ability to run.

My old coach once told me,guys with shorter arms usually can bench press more then guys with longer arms. Hence shorter your arms are the less distance you have to push up. So I guess being a little guy could help out some I suppose.... (Don't really know) Just my 2 cents worth.

True, I've got the longest set of arms you've ever seen (literally, never been beaten yet). I've never benched much.... (Damn those long arms).
But hey, God made an up side to every down side. :)

I've got short arms and have always been able to bench a good amount of weight, but I have short legs also, and piss alot of people off when I drive their car. Since I have to move their seat all the way foward and never put it back lol....
I really stink at running too,I'm not very fast.
God Bless.

From reading "Warrior Elite" i gathered that the guys in the smurf crews weren't as strong as the bigger ones under their boats, but they were better than the big guys in the O-Course. I have to agree with you guys on the arm deal. I have a friend that i work out with and he is hispanic so he is alittle smaller in stature. I tower of this guy and he can out bench me all day, but when it comes to running.....well he still beats me but thats not the point! Anyways, its all about heart. '

When i was at the Pittsburgh airshow this past summer, they had a group of SEALs (from team 8 I think) HALO in as part of the show. I went over to talk to them afterwards, and one of couldn't have been over 5'2" tall. On a side note, they were the only people with firearms inside the gates. It was pretty neat seeing a group of guys in full combat gear just walking around with M-4's on their backs. Funny how I noticed alot of little things about the guy I talked to. He still had his altimiter on, both of his firearms had the safeties on, little stuff like that. He also said he had alot of respect for Richard Marcincko.

I plan on going to BUD/S you cant let size get in your way! Dont let anything get in your way!

Rolling up my pant legs here Swimmer2004. You and I need to talk. Next time you see me in chat pull me aside. You've been reading to many books. Your right about having the heart, because that is critical.
The Smurf guys are better because they do not have to lift the rubber boat as high to get it on their heads. This way they can take off quicker for the balmy surf while the giants are still in uplift.

if u people knew anything about the human body u would know that theres no such thing as short and long arms, only skinny and thick arms. bench pressing has nothin to do with the length of ur arms but has everything to do with the strength of ur chest and triceps. MUSCLE IS LIKE ROPE, THE THICKER IT IS THE STRONGER IT IS AND THATS A FACT. SIZE DOES MATTER SOMETIMES. HAVE U EVER SEEN A SKINNY NAVY SEAL?

OK, Then why do shirt sleeves come in different lengths? Oh yeah, my arms measure about 16 in., pretty thick rope, and I would be hard pressed to bench press more than about 250 lbs. now...Old age and heart disease.

You asked "HAVE U EVER SEEN A SKINNY NAVY SEAL?
I have. My friend Sportioli Korstad. Never missed a beat. Never miss a bottle of Thunderbird. Never missed an operation. Always had a smile, walked liked a crab when he was on the grape. Sideways.

My Grandfather was in Jap prison camp for about 4 years during the war. Was one of the toughest hardest guys you could meet. about 5'7"... He said that in his experiences with what he wnet through it was generally the big guys who went down first. I guess the big body needs more to keep it going. I've seen lots of wiry guys who are extremely powerful. You don't have to be big to be powerful.
And as has been said, if you are mentally tough that is more important, than just being able to bench press x hundred pounds..

your dam right size matters - your feet must reach the ground - that why I'm no longer in the teams - my left leg no
longer reaches the gound.

"Size doesn't matter... Oh yeah, go see if a cat can beat a lion"
Well, it can be the other way around too actually.
I can find quite a few advantages being small as any soldier. Push-ups becomes one hell of a lot easier. Try making them on your knees, kinda easy, huh?
Anyway, the thing a soldier is supposed to do is be in combat. Well, a 5'6" guy is a smaller target than a 6'6" guy.. pretty logical..
Real SEALs, please correct me if I'm wrong, though I doubt I am..

I am 5'7 and weigh 125 lbs and I've always been kinda worried about how that would affect me in getting through BUD/S but after reading Wetwash's and Wazz's posts I feel a heck of a lot less worried lol. My friends who know that I want to be a Navy SEAL after college have some doubts on whether I'll make it or not because they always see huge buff guys in the movies and stuff, but I just kinda laugh at 'em and say, well we'll see in a few years. My main plan is just to keep working out as much as possible these next three years and I know that nothing is impossible.

You know, guys, first of all I'm not a SEAL and hever could be (I live in Russia).
But earlier when I was 6'4'' and 65 kg it was much more easier to me to run, do push and pull ups.
But now I weight 76kg (6'5'')and girls love me more, however I've got to eat much more;
but this wouldn't stop me from getting 10 kg more weight => till 85 just to be a normal shape,
though each kg more requires more energy when running, swimming or any other workout.
