I've been watching the Eco-Challenge adventure race that took place in Fiji sometime in 2002 on the USA network. The broadcast started on Sunday evening. There is one team made up of the following:

Maurice Nelson (ex-SEAL)
Scott Wilk (ex-RANGER)
Peter Brunett (Police Captain)
Diane Haworth (?)

When they show Diane being interviewed, they put the words "trains SEALs" under her name. I'm not chauvinist, but I have to say that this surprised me. Does anyone have an idea on what kind of training she has or does provide? Could it be as simple as "fitness training," of a former SEAL that allows her to claim "trains SEALs?"

Well, I just had to check. We don't have any current or former SEALs named "Maurice Nelson". We actually have two guys with the first name "Maurice", but they're both older frogs.

I am with Chickenhawk.

I searched USANetwork and found a very abbreviated Bio of the Team. See:

Chickenhawk is correct here (as usual). That guy was NEVER a SEAL. He is from South Florida near me and there was a story on him in the paper. The paper Sun Sentinal worded it shaky. They said - "Maurice Nelson -a former Navy SEAL candidate" Note use of the word CANDIDATE. They also said in this article, "his military service includes attending Navy SEALs training..." Notice ATTENDING. They did not say GRADUATED.

So the article never said he was a SEAL and I do not know if HE himself made that claim or not. But I do feel the author should have made it muc more clear that this guy WAS NOT, nor NEVER WAS a SEAL. You shouldnt have to read between the lines on that. So if the show said he WAS a SEAL - he was NOT.

Also, there are no females that train SEALs at BUD/S or STT or anything like that. She could have, perhaps trained some SEALs in an arena not considered NSW (perhaps she taught a civilian or even some kind of military weapons course) that was attended by some SEALs, hence she would have "trained SEALs." I do assure you however, she did not train anyone to become a SEAL or anything like that. You gotta look hard at the way the media states things. They try to be tricky and sleak to make things look intriging to boost theie ratings. A bunch of BS, but thats why I dont watch garbage like the Eco-Challenge, etc. *lol*

Hope this helps clear some stuff up for ya....

Thank you for all of your replys.

1) The USA Network definitely protrayed him (Maurice) to be an ex-SEAL by using the words "Former Navy SEAL" under his name whenever his image appeared on the program.

2) It's kind of a relief that his (or the show's) claim turned out to be false because his performance wasn't that impressive. I mean physically he was OK, but he wasn't team oriented at all, which is directly contradictory to what a true SEAL would be.

3) The female's (or the show's) claim that she "trains Navy SEAL's" bothers me as well. Oh well, at least I've been educated enough from your posts to be able to smell BS a little better than before.

Thanks again!
