What is a sawgunner`s job, and what are the roles each Teamember plays within the platoon?

WW, Doug, Mark-sorry for disregarding the SEALs answer only rule for this forum, but I should hope that about 7 months as a SAW gunner in a line infantry outfit will qualify me to answer a portion of this question.

powder,

A SAW gunner is a soldier/sailor/Marine who is assigned the M249 Squad Automatic Weapon. Or in the case of the Teams, the MK 46 ( an improved SAW ). In our Tables of Organization and Equipment a SAW gunner is refered to as an automatic rifleman. The M249 Squad Automatic Weapon is a gas operated, air cooled, belt or magazine fed ( except the MK 46 ), automatic weapon that fires from the open bolt position. The SAW is used to increase the firepower of a squad while keeping the weight down somewhat. The SAW can be used to deliver surpressive fire past the range of an M16/M4. A SAW gunner can employ the weapon for either supporting/surpressive fire or as part of an assault element. SAW's augment the volume of firepower of the element's machine gun ( M240 series, or M60 ) while increasing the portability of the weapon system.

I can't answer the Team specific questions, but I hope the above helps,

Mac
