I was wondering, what would happen if you tried to join the SEALs, but failed BUD/S (and you weren't in the Navy at the time). Would you still have to join the Navy even though you failed BUD/S?

You have to enlist into the Navy in order to tryout for BUD/S training. Upon enlistment, you'll have to choose one of the jobs that are under the SEAL rating. After boot camp, you attend the A school for the job that you chose and then you go to BUD/S. If you happen to fail BUD/S, then you will be assigned to the job that you chose.
(Note: I'm not a SEAL nor have I gone through BUD/S yet. I have heard this question a lot though.]
