I realize how having such a strong background in arms as a Gunner's Mate would have could help in becoming a Sniper as a SEAL. I'm wondering, would Intelligence Specialist be a good choice as well? I'm currently setup for GM, but the possibility of shifting to IS is there. I have a basic understanding of what each of these rates entail. I'm just looking for some pro/con, suggestions. Thanks.

It doesn't matter. GM School will prepare you primarily to fire large naval weapons. You will not spend a significant amount of time firing small arms. I would worry more about which one you qualify for, depending on your ASVAB score. Then ask yourself which one you would be happier doing in the fleet if you do not complete BUD/S.

I did quite well [ much better than I expected ] on the ASVAB, so for me, I just need to determine which I'd like to go into. Thanks for the returns though.

As an active duty IS, I think one of the more important things you should look at in choosing a rate is advancement opportunities. Ask your recruiter about CREO groups and advancement quotas for any rates you are interested in.

Wanna be a sniper? Graduate BUD/S, get to a team, shoot better than expert, then stand in line.
