Hi,

I was wondering what everyone's opinion's are on trying to enter BUDS as an officer instead of enlisting in the SEAL challenge contract?

I've talked to a few people who were in service and they all say to go in as an officer. But I talked to the SEAL motivator and he said officers get a max of 6years in the field, once they hit a certain rank they will sit behind a desk. I don't think I could sit behind a desk everyday.

Last thing, I read an article ont he getfitnow.com boards about new stuff going on where they are reorganizing the seal teams and will now have 8 teams. They will also make the entire team deploy every 18 months for 6 months, and this includes the officers, so I read that the officers were excited that they get to deploy away from their desk. Anyone heard anything about this?

Thanks,
Matt mouser

Matt- you and i seem to have the same question. I have spoken to several guys who STRONGLY advised me to go in an as an officer, but I have heard that it is much harder to get a spot in BUD/s if you do....do you know anything about this?

I was looking through the old topics and came to this one. Unanswered questions! I'm curious also, do officers get 6 years max in the field and then a boring desk job? That would suck. Please respond :)

I enlised in the SEAL Challenge Program with my source rating as a GM. I had the same questions that you did. People were telling me to go in as an officer but I know for a fact that it is MUCH harder to get a spot at BUD/s because there are much less billets for officers. I talked to Capt. Bisset, a SEAL Motivator, and he told me that they need good enlisted men for the SEALS. As for the 6 year thing as an officer, I've never heard anything like that and think that it is bull **** , but you never know.If I were you and really wanted to be a SEAL, I would enlist under the SEAL Program and go from there. If you want to become an officer, it'll probably take about 4 years for the officer than another 2 for training. DO what you want but I would go enlisted, as I have. Also what are your ASVAB scores?

What if you had the chance to go to the Academy? Go and be an officer or enlist under the contract?

Actually, it is true that you get very little operational opportunity as an officer once in the SEAL times. 5-7 years is the average currenly. Enlisted men can go for as long as they want, or until they get killed.
