lol... okay I know this is probably going to sound really truly retarded.... but I have to ask "How can I find seals to be friends with?" I live in San Diego... so I know there are some out here, but...? I just think that SEALS are the most successful, driven, interesting individuals out there & I would love to meet some and make friends...lol... ESPECIALLY because I am a girl & can't do the whole BUDS thing. Plus, I really only do want to meet SEALS as FRIENDS.... If I was forward or something of that nature I could have just gone onto the amphib base and talked to them, but I don't want them to think I am hitting on them.... Hmmmmm, Since you guys are SEALS, Do you have any suggestions?

Let me know what works for you . . . I was reading a travel guide this afternoon that claimed that
a. San Diego has more admirals (current plus retired) than any other city in the USA
b. due to the presence of the Naval Air Station & the SEALs, San Diego has been voted the "City-least-likely-to-be-invaded'!

NL1 - This is a long shot, but time is not on your side.

There is a West Coast Frogman/SEAL Reunion at the SEAL Strand on 16-17 Aug 02. If you would call the Amphib Base Operator and ask for the phone number of a SEAL Team Quaterdeck.(pick your own number). When you dial the SEAL Team Quaterdeck you will be talking to a SEAL. Make your pitch to him about getting someone to escort you to the Reunion, or post your name on a Bulletin Board. This is chancy to both you and the SEAL. But it is much better than searching out the SEAL hangouts (taverns, bars, and having yourself branded with a different title).

The phone numbers of the SEAL Quarterdecks are not secret or classified. The Amphib Base Operator is allowed to give out these numbers.

Let me know how you do.

Noel, I'm sorry to burst your bubble, but NO you CAN'T just go onto the amphib base without some sort of affiliation, i.e. guest of active duty person, or family member, or during a special event. The chances of a one on one with personnel w/in the SpecWar community under those circumstances are slim. Unfortunately, in your denial of "hitting on them," me thinks thou doth protest too much.

If you are genuine in seeking pals to hang out with, your approach has likely hit a brick wall with many people in the community. I have to admit if you are in fact a wannabe Frog Hog (who in the H***, would wannabe a Frog Hog?), you have one of the more creative approaches I've ever heard. Remember, there really are a lot of successful, driven, interesting individuals in our great city, and thousands of them aren't SEALs, or even affiliated with the military.

I truly hope you do find some friends here who share your interests and allow you to be yourself.

Best Wishes
BB

Go to McPs in Coronado on a Thursday night and you may meet some - but watch out b/c they may be looking for one thing. Team gusy are sparse in nado these days due to operational commitments though.

Mark, you are such a bad kid! As you say tho' looked pretty sparse the other night when skims and I did our own personal celebration of his advancement (he's a stubborn SOB) and my new job. (BTW, if either of the tarbenders on duty read this, "Yes, I DO know what a Snowshoe is and I really did want those two I got. They were the best I'd had in a long, long time.) The ratio was about 7 to 1, and it was nowhere's near as entertaining as in years past when certain of us chicks would go to watch the antics. I don't think it had anything to do with skims being a male because he can be pretty brutally catty too when he wants to. *G* We miss you around the old business and hope you and the family are doing well.

Thank you so much for letting me know about this :) I will try to go & I will definitely let you know how I do... lol... yeah, I wouldn't want to get branded with that other title. I have been around the Navy my whole life, because my dad was a Senior Chief... & sadly I have seen too many women be.... well..... you know.... Thanks again for helping find a way to meet Seals without looking bad. I appreciate it!!!

Thank you BB for the response. You're right there are alot of successful, driven, and interesting people in the civilian community as well... I don't know what it is about the SEALs that I find SOOOO interesting.... Maybe because I can't be one (since I am a girl). I have access to the base because of my dad being in the military. I am actually on the dry side of the amphib base alot due to college extension courses that are offered there. I can't wait till I am done with college so that I can join the Navy.

Okay, I know that this is naive... but what is a "frog hog"?

Thanks Again for responding :)

I really only do want to meet SEALS as FRIENDS

Yep, I can see it now somewhere in Coronado there is a lonely SEAL sitting in a bar somewhere hoping against hope that a single attractive woman will approach him, share a drink and become life-long friends, no romantic connections, just friends ...

Seriously though if you genuinely just want to be friends with someone (specifically a SEAL) then why not just continue posting all your questions, comments etc. on the board. If you're uncomfortable asking things in a public forum, then I would suggest you send a general message asking a SEAL to contact you directly to answer your questions - Mark seems pretty willing (and patient), so maybe he can answer some of your questions, or have someone else contact you, you never know you may meet someone on-line (on a friendly basis) that you can share a beer with sometime. Also, there are a lot of women on the site who are married to SEALs or have friends and/or relatives that are SEALs, try asking them if they'd like to get together with you (provided of course they live in San Diego) and give you another perspective, at least you won't have to worry that the guys would think you're hitting on them. If you are just looking for someone to hang out with, you 've gotten some suggestions where to go, so maybe you and your girlfriends can head down there grab a drink and mingle - although I can't see these guys having a whole lot of free time to just hang out - I may be wrong!

Just a thought. Good luck!

By the way BB, what the H*** is a "Frog Hog"???

A female groupie term for Navy SEALs....or something like that. Noelani, you seem like a nice person, hope you find whatever it is your looking for and don't get mixed up with the wrong crowd looking for it. Good luck and take care.

Roula, thank you for helping clear the frog hog issue up. I'm so surprised that so few recognized the term. Methinks my age is showing? Eeeew!

A "snowshoe" is a shot drink made with Yukon Jack and peppermint schnapps. And McP's does make the best I've tasted in a long time! Thanks again!

It was my traditional drink/shot to celebrate making the Dept of the Navy civilian employee equivalent of rate way back when I first was a civilian employee at what used to be called Naval Submarine Base San Diego aka Point Loma. The parties were usually held at the Pump Room or the Chief's Club. Anyone remember those?

*Hanging head* okay, so everyone who remembers these things and the time frames now has a really good idea of how old I am.

LOL!! BB not to worry - we get better with age (or so I'm told)! Besides, it once you start saying things like "I rememer when I used to have snowshoe shots" that you have to worry! My rule of thumb, follow every aged statement with "or so I'm told!" (so you'd say "they used to be called Frog Hogs, or so I'm told"!! LOL)

Roula: thanks for the clear up on "Frog Hog" - - Good Christ I hope that's not a nickname they gave themselves!

I am too, I would think the term alone would be self-explanatory.

You know I never had a snowshoe shot done with Yukon Jack before. I usually have it with Southern Comfort or Wild Turkey...my fav of the two is the Southern Comfort. I once had a bartender introduce me to a snowflake shot done with peppermint schnapps and gin, it was ok by I still prefer snowshoe shot. Now that you mention it I think next time I'll have them do one for me with Yukon Jack it sounds pretty good. Thanks! :)

Hmmm, maybe the Yukon Jack thing was a regional thing that one of the bartenders at the Pump Room brought in. I do know that, after chatting w/Scotty today as I was breezing past McP's (there's this coffee shop near there --- I'm a caffeine addict, ask skimmer.), that my snowshoes were made w/JD. Personally, I think the JD snowshoes are better. Maybe that "oak aging" that the manufacturer claims makes the difference.

*pondering* What a change of pace, from how to meet SEALs to frog hogs and snowshoes! Gotta love it! :)

Well I am going to enjoy some Jack Daniels and a good cigar with some friends tonight. Oh ,talk about horses my oldest granddaughter is in New Mexico with my wife for Arabian youth nationals and she just today won a national championship for the 13 year old age group. Was a Resrve Champion in a second competition also. Very ,very proud.

Arabian youth nationals

Lordy I remember the junior days. My cousin and I did very well in the Northeast back in the mid/late '70's both on the junior AHSA circuit and the 4H circuit.
Ran into a girl I'd competed against at the Miramar stable about 5 years ago. She tried to sell me a Polish Arab filly, but wanted 10k for her. I prefer the Egyptian lines anyway (except for my darling Cid who was out of the Witez line) just because they tend to be shorter in stature. 16 hands is a stretch for me without assistance. I hope your grand daughter is encouraged to stay with her horses. I had to fight my family tooth and nail to even get a feed/board lease for a 4H project horse. In retrospect, I think they were afraid of my getting injured. I know it wasn't a money or space issue.

She was injured several years ago when a horse threw her and she broke her leg ,2 surgeries later she went right back up like nothing happened. My wife and granddaughter do this together and we are buying a ranch near Temecula so they are in it for the long haul. We have 2 full Arabians. By the way she competes in the English Pleasure Riding. Honor role student ,horse champion ,does modeling and respects people. Can't ask for more ! She lives with us so she probably gets spoiled.

Wazz, do you know if the west coast hold annual frog reunions? Seems to me I remember a guy I dated that went to one out there and it was in August.

Someone please help me out with the McP's info. I've never been there, but would like to get a good idea of what the place is like. Before you get your snickering in, I write, so I am always looking for good information on places that have character, or is that characters? You can email me with the info or post it, either works for me. Email is listed in my profile.

Use an English saddle: it has those two metal D-rings on the right-hand side, towards the back -- that's where you attach the rope ladder to climb up!
