To those who have been there:

Of all the obstacles I've seen, heard, and read about regarding BUD/s the one that literally made my jaw drop was the 50 meter underwater swim. How the heck do you pull that off? I've been practicing (with safety a major concern) and have been able to stay submerged for approx 30 meters. I start off with around 17 meters or so and as my muscles warm up to the task, my oxygen intake increases, and my mental ability to stay focused increases I add on 5-7 meters each time I go under. Other than simply trying to push myself a few meters farther each time (a long and arduous process) are there any other methods to train to train/prepare? Also, how long does it take the average swimmer to travel the full 50 meters underwater?

p.s. I've considered sprinting exercises as it also requires a large amount of oxygen and is much safer to do while running than underwater--is this good idea?

Sincerely,
DW.

At the expense at being yelled at for not having served 5 tours of combtat duty in Vietnam as a SEAL and hence means I don't know anything I will help you out anyways man. First of all it is the toughest evolution for most people. Even the instructor staff make a big deal of this evolution by not even allowing you to see the others who go before you do it (they make you turn your back so that you can't see them do CPR on some of the guys). A good deal many trainees fail and some get droped even in second phase after they've gone through hell week and all because they still have not been able to master it (even though technically you are SUPPOSE to get droped in first phase for this........one of the many things i didn't like about bud/s, its actually a TRAINING program verses a SELECTION program). Anyways the way to train for this is NOT by practicing it. That is very dangerous unless you are doing it with someone who knows rescue breathing and CPR. They way the instructors at BUD/s reccommends that you train for this is right in your own bedroom. They hand out sheets which are breathing exercises desgined to expand your lung. I still have my sheet but i'm not going to type it all out. Basically you just hold your breath for some time then you breathe for sometime. Say 30 second hold breath, 30 seconds breathing, ect. Then you can progress as you get better to say 1 minute hold breath, 30 seconds breathing, The sheet I have does it pyramid style. Basically you can just make up your own breathing exercises to suit you though. Good luck!..................... (should I point out that no older SEAL would know this since they didn't do this 30 years ago? :-/ ........ hmmmm, no i think i'll just keep my mouth shut cause i might damage someone's precious ego)

should I point out that no older SEAL

Did they do it in 200? Or is that too old? These Kids want to talk to a real SEAL not some dud who "knows" alot but has no idea what it is like to finish something "hard". When the going got tough, you quit. Live with it and quit bad mouthing those that did have the intestinal fortitude to complete their training. Athlete my ***, the only thing athletic about you is your mouth.

No offense fellas, but Kevin was the only one who actually answered the question. If you hate him so much, ignore him.

Yeah no kiddin. I answer all these kids questions based upon my recent experience. All you older guys do is berate me and others probably because thats all you can do because when you went through BUD/s 20 years ago they didn't have this so you don't know a damn thing about it. You want to make me look fooloish then re- answer the question with better info but since I know you don't have any info on the subject let alone better info then why don't you keep your comments to yourself so these kids don't have to screen through all these posts to get to my good answers.

DW-

Kevin is NOT and NEVER was a Navy SEAL. His comments, advice, and information are NOT endorsed, encouraged, NOR are they accepted by this community.

You should pay CLOSE attention to the advice of guys like Wetwash, Wazz, DirkD, Doug, and Bullrider. THEY are the real deal... they've seen the entire program... not just the first few weeks... and will be able to provide you the most accurate and most useful information. If they cannot, I am certain they would be able to direct you to someone that can.

Likewise... Kevin answered the thread first. Dirk and Doug have been making rounds catching up with and CORRECTING his info on a frequent basis...

Just a little FYI

Best wishes... GO GET YOUR TRIDENT.. and then you can tell Kevin what it's all about...
