Do your palms face you or face away from you when you do a pull-up?
(I always thought pull-ups were with plams facing away from you and chin-ups were with palms facing towards you but now im not sure)

I think they're both called pull-ups, one works your biceps the other works your upper pecs and shoulders I do believe. Don't mark me on this though, just a thought.

U know I had the same question. I do know that the Marine PFT doesn't discriminate from "palm out" and "palm in" pullups. Do the SEALs consider either a pullup for their PFT?

Palm facing u for pullups. this works biceps more. palm facing away for chin ups. works back more. pullups are generally what the guys do.

Its the other way around, palms facing you for a chin-up and palms facing away for a pull-up. You are right about one part guys nomally do pull-ups (palms facing away) because its harder. This affects the forearm, shulders, and back muscles.

I thought it was the other way around. Palms away for pull ups and palms facing you for chin ups? Which do they want you to do? Somebody clarify.

Frootloop is correct, but I would stop being so worried about what they are called and be more concerned with being able to do them.

I agree. Frootloop is correct, palms out pullup, palms in chinup. it says so on stew smith's website. who gives a **** if the one you are doing matches what you call it, just do what's easiest first and work your way up.

I find it better if i think about pulling the bar to my chin rather than my chin the the bar , also try counting backwards e.g. how many to go rather than how many you have done its all a big mind game .

hope this helps

check out this page for some different things to try http://www.trainforstrength.com/ex-10.shtml

CHIN-UPS

Chin-ups work the forearm muscles (grabbing the bar) and the biceps. To do chin-ups, grab the bar with your palms facing you, arms straight and feet off the ground (bend your knees if you have to). Pull yourself up, until your chin passes over the bar, then lower yourself until your arms are straight again (1 rep).

PULL-UPS

Pull-ups work the forearms, shoulders and upper back muscles. The movement is the same as chin-ups, but you grab the bar with your palms facing away from you.

but dose it really matter we agree on what muscles they work

Stop Having a spaze about all this non sense. When you get to the test just follow it like the guy in front of you, and practice both before then. Don't you think it would be benificial to practice and become good at both rather than just the one you need for the PFT. If you all are concerned with only getting by on the PFT then you have a heck of alot more to worry about.

Swimmer2004, how about this wasn't a question of what to do, it was a question of what they are called. I do both of them anyway. I just wanted to know which one was which so i could follow this workout.
