I was wondering, how does a student at BUD/s get assigned to the different leadership roles, like the Leading Petty Officer, boat crew leader, or any other one that I didnt mention. One more question too, for the SEALs that are reading this post, what did you do after earning your Trident? Did you go out and celebrate, or just go straight to the SEAL team your assigned too?

the leaders in BUD/S are assigned by Rank or rate.. But as training goes on the True leaders are sifted out.. When i went through training, we did not have a trident.. I was sent to the Teams in a Friday morning.. on Fri afternoon i was field daying the locker rooms...Along with the other guys from my class assigned to that team.

Excellent question.

Leadership roles as in any occupation comes with experience. And one must have a pay grade, a Rank, to support that leadership position. But passing a promotion test and receiving a higher paygrade does not allot a higher degree of leadership. The added leadership role comes to those who have the attitude to lead, and do lead.

In my day it was those who had leadership ability and experience who were assigned the most dependent roles. A new man must have sufficient time to display his abilities within a Team before he is accepted by his Team Mates and superiors as a leader. Going forth in combat takes takes combat experience. And to insure a new Team member performs up to an expected level the new member will be assigned a role subordinate to that of an experienced combat Team Mate. In time the new replaces the old.
