If a SEAL were being deployed in the immediate future, what steps would he take to make certain his family was prepared for the domestic threat that can be expected to evolve in his absence?

My son's wife is former Navy and redneck, and knows what to do. She also carries and ususally has a 225 lb dog with her.

Wives left behind as deployment widows are in the same boat as any woman alone. Some form of immediate defensive protection should be made available to the woman alone. If the woman is intimidated by guns, and many are, then some other form of weapon should be employed, even if it is a mobile kitchen knife, a home made spear, or a Taser. If and when an attack to the woman alone occurs she will have just seconds to react. Her choices will be to give in to avoid a beating, fight back, or run. Some Rape Counselors have advised to try flirting to gain the confidence of the attacker. I do not recommend the latter as the woman must have the moxy to gain the attention and confidence of a less than rationale attacker in a less than desireable time frame of panic.

My own wife was gun hesitant until I took her to the range over a 4 visit period. I first taught her familararity (handling an empty gun). Then just straight, stand up shooting. Then shooting from a chair (not too unlike when sitting in bed). Then standing on either foot. To wit: Under unusual conditions. Here I recommend a double action revolver to avoid one less movement of remembering to and clikcing the saftety. And a gun that fits the hand of the woman should be considered. My wife's hand is quite small so I bought a small revolver and loaded it up with hallow points. And if the attacker comes in when I am in bed with my wife he has to face both of us. And shame on him.
