Real SEALs please respond:

What do you consider to be the best source rate? What are some advantages and disadvantages of different source rates? Right now I am in DEP and I selected Aviation Computer and Electronics Technician. That is not a SEAL Source Rate, but If i pass the PT screen Test in Bootcamp, then I will switch to a SEAL Source Rate. That is why I am curious. Any information will be VERY appreciated. Some of my top intrest are Aviation Anti-Submarine Warfare specialist (mainly because it deals with computers) and Intelligence Specialist. I scored an 82 on the ASVAB and could probably score higher if I re-took it. Once again, thanks for any feedback.

God bless the SEALs and everyone who puts there life on the line to serve and fight for our great country and the freedom that too many take for granted.

To view all the SEAL Source Ratings go here: http://www.sealchallenge.navy.mil/seal/bec_sourcerates.asp.

It is a mis-nomer when addressing the specialties to call them "Rates". Rates are the numerical pay grade of the enlisted man. i.e. E-3, E-4, etc. thru E-9. A Rating is the specialty. Like Boatswain Mate, Gunners Mate, etc.

I would pick the rating I would most enjoy. There will be some prohibitions on your selection as the SEALs accept only the Ratings shown in the link above. Pick the one you wish from the link. You will find that in the Teams members often will not have the oppounity equal to Fleet personnel to have daily or even weekly touch with the equipment or operations of their chosen Rating. Therefore, it takes a large amount of study to pass the promotion exams.

Thank you very much for your reply Wazz. And thank you for correcting me about the rate thing. I dont want to ask somebody in person and look like a dumbass.

No problem.

The misnomer arises as in Navy speak one would ask "What is his rate?", or, "What is your Rate?" The reply would be. as an example, "Gunners Mate Second" (GM, E-5), or "Bosun Mate First" (BM, E-6). It is official jargon versus personal jargon.
