Hi, I am 14 yr old and I desire to become a SEAL. I have felt pretty good about this and all but..... I am very afraid of dying. I am scared that I will die on my first mission before anything even happens. I don't want to get killed but then again I really want to be a SEAL. I don't know what to do.
I don't want sympathy or anything like that, I just want help. Thanks

I'm not a SEAL or anything but i do know that death is pretty much everywhere and any job you take like SEALs has a chance of you getting killed, but then of course even if you are a a regular guy who works for some insurance company you have a chance of dying too probably from some big meteorite falling from the sky and killing you while you go out to get the Sunday paper. And SEALs get so much training and stuff i would imagine they put their full trust in their teammates and even if they're in a firefight or something they can onlys trust that their teammates are out there putting bullets in the bad guys right next to you.

well this is a tough question to answer, because no one ever knows for sure what will happen. My husband will be getting his pin this May and I get scared at times about him possibly dying on the job especially with all that is going on in the world today. Being a SEAL can be a dangerous job, so can pretty much any other job in the military. there are many dangerous civilian jobs too though. I sometimes ask my husband, what if you die, what will I do? (not a great thing to ask someone by the way) but he never knows what to say. he just trys to joke about it and says, well what if the dog suddenly attacks you or what if you get in some type of accident? then there's not much to be said. It's true, anyone can die at any time. Most SEALs come home from missions, sometimes they do die, but in the research I've done, there really havent been many. They have been trained really well and are prepared for pretty much anything. But that doesnt mean accidents dont happen. So i understand your concern, but i guess you cant go through life being afraid of things and not trying them for fear of dying. you're still young so you have plenty of time to think about things, but that's just my take on the situation.

I know it could happen to anyone. I mean, something could happen to me if I had a civilian job but the chances are not nearly as high as being a SEAL. I don't know, maybe I should just do something that won't involve terrorists and death.

You will die when it is your time to go, regardless when and where you are at. If it is your time, it will happen. Try not to fear death, just always try to besure you are ready at any momment.

Your feeling of a fatal ending is understandable. However, if it is furthermost in you mind I urge you to not join the SEALs or any combat unit. In combat units each participant depends upon the other. In your case I already see that you may freeze in a given combat situation. Not a good thing when others depend upon you.

Yeah it sounds like maybe being a SEAL just isnt for you. But you are still young, so plenty of time ahead of you. Military life is very different from any other...
Of course you are afraid to die. It is natural - most people are afraid of it as well. But in relation to the unfortunate incidents of dying on an operation in the Teams, I'd like to quote a great SEAL that met an untimely death not long ago in Afghanistan. I do not remember what he said exactly word for word, but I know this is extremely close to the way he worded it:
"...Being a SEAL is something I have always wanted. I loved being a SEAL and loved the people I worked with. If I do die being a SEAL, do not cry for me, for I have died doing something I loved to do. How many people can say that they died doing something they loved to do..."
-Petty Officer Neil Roberts (RIP)
KIA, Operation Enduring Freedom, Afghanistan
He wrote words to that effect in a letter for his wife and kids in the event that he perished, which he unfortunately did. Like he said, at least he died doing something he loved to do. How many people CAN say that?

Humm i guess im in the minority on this one cause ive never felt afraid of dying. The only thing ive every really thought about is how my parents would feel if i died but ive never worried about it and its never stopped me from doing what i want. And i do alot of things that most people would seem stupid but to me there fun and no im not talking about doing drugs or drinking cause both those are stupid. Anyways I think people should worry more about living and having a good time this way when your in that unconsucious state about to die you realise that you lived.

Enter action with confidence and boldness. If you are unsure of a course of action, do not attempt it. Your doubts and hesitations will infect your execution. Timidity is dangerous, better to enter with boldness. Everyone admires the bold, no one honors the timid. Going halfway with half a heart digs the deeper grave.
I am very afraid of dying
I would not want to go into combat with anyone that was not afraid of dying. The key is to not allow it to control you, you control it. The fear is what give you the rush, that allows you to do what you were trained to do.
I am scared that I will die on my first mission before anything even happens.
Hmm,
If this continues I would find something else to do. Troops in combat tend to be somewhat supperstisious(Sp) and we always were wary of someone that said they were going to die on this mission, it very often became a self-fulfilling prophesy. Good luck.

I understand where you are coming from, all humans do. It is a natural feeling that we all have.....fear of the unknown. The best way to cope with death for myself is not to dwell on it. In doing that though, you must also keep in mind that you can go at anytime, regardless of what your doing. People in this world take chances everyday just by driving to work. Many people die from preventable diseases. The main point is to know that its a part of life, it was meant to be, and don't dwell on it because it will happen to everyone when it is their time.... we are all faced by it, and in the end we will all have to face it. I would rather die for my country and the men I will be serving with in the military more than any other death I can think of.....and for me that is all I need to do my job.

I'm not a seal but I too would like to be one, but one thing is that you don't think about death or dying or you could always ask advice from a counselor about that. But don't be too worried about death that is what I think.

i have never really been scared about dying i am more afraid of the effect on my family. but i think of it as just the normal thing, you could die by falling off a curb and hitting your head or you could die from a grenade, millions of things can kill you, just live your life though

Death is death, dose it really matter who delivers it. Your gonna die one day, what better way then doing what you love, and fighting for your country.
