I am 23 and my best friend and brother is an officer who is going through BUD/s. I get emotional talking to him about it, but would like to understand a few details. While I respect what he is doing and I am proud of him, I had some questions that I hoped someone could answer.
1. How long is his obligation coming from a normal university through OCS and BUD/s? When does this start?
2. How often will he be away and for how long? I know this depends, but on average?
3. I know the missions vary, but in general, what is the danger level? Are you prepared to cope with anything?
Thank you so much. I appreciate your patience and the great service you are providing to my brother and me.

Katie, I can understand your concerns. I get the same sort of response from my family and friends when I talk about going to BUD/S and being a SEAL. There is one important thing that I think you should remember about SEALs and other Special Operations types. Yes, they do some dangerous things. Yes, just training for those guys is dangerous. But they are also the best in the world at what they do. They are highly trained, and trust me, as an active duty sailor, the Navy LOVES the concepts of safety and Operational Risk Management. I guess what I am saying is; riding in a race car with Jeff Gordon at 175 mph is dangerous, yes. But it sure is a lot better than riding in a race car at 175 mph with your some ordinary joe off the street.

Accept Chickenhawk's invitation and email him. I was in a Class a little ahead of him and I know his credentials. He is a completeley SEAL experienced friend in extending his hand to you.
I was in a Class a little ahead
Wazz, a "little" ahead?LOL Katie, My son has spoken very well of CH and I have seen many of his posts on this shack and the O\"old shack" and I have been always impressed with his knowledge and honesty. BTW, CH, Doc mentioned something about 1st or second "solo" doing a mock "emergency surface?" LOL

When I completed Frog school I was assigned to the Nina. Then quickly placed on the Santa Maria. It was when I was on the Pinta that we bumped into a rock and discovered America. That wasn't too far ahead of Chickenhawk's time, was it?
