View Full Version : Confused About SEALs Fraternization!!!!!

I'm writing a roamnce/adventure book for Harlequin romances and I'm stuck on a certain spot. I have the hero of the book, a Navy SEAL Lt. Commander who is an instructor at Coronado, living in a ;arge beach house with several of his SEAL buddies/fellow instructors. Is this allowed or normal? Because I'd REALLY hate to have to rewrite 300 pages!!!!! ;-{ But I will do so if it's not based on fact or is unrealistic. I sincerely appreciate anyone's help on this matter. THANK you!!!!!!
Oh, one other thing, do SEALs sometimes allow a girlfriend or wife who has shot off her mouth....run the Obstacle course and do PT like the rest of the guys? Because a central scene I'm wanting has a girlfriend saying she can do better at the O course and swim better than her boyfriend and his SEAL buddies. I want her to be put to the test. Is this allowed?
THANK YOU for being kind to a fledgling SEAL fan!!!

First off I'm not a SEAL and I haven't gone to BUD/S. I'm still in high school.Anyways...... I think It would OK if you put those things in the book even if it is inaccurate. Just simply state , in the Preface, that certain in the book are inaccurate. As long as youstate someing like that SOMEWHERE in the book it would be alright.

Hey........if you'll allow me to respond. Yes, the SEALS can and do fraternize with their officers. They also don't call their officer "Sir". All the SEALS call each other by their first names. It is their way of being as invisible as possible. They also have more relaxed standards in regards to hair length, facial hair and body piercings. When they travel they do not do so in uniform and will often make up stories in airports of who they are.
Girlfriends will be allowed on base only to those with some superiority. I have gone to work with them before, but only in the buildings, not on the beach. The officers and anyone else who comes into contact with a SEAL girlfriend will be treated like royalty. There is no way she'll be allowed on the obstacle course. A lot of this depends also on how long the SEAL has been a member of the teams.
Hope this helps.

You are way too sensitive! I don't think that the person is angry. Lighten up and grow some thick hide or you have to get off the bus.

Hey! I was just simply makeing a statement. I'm not sensitive at all. I don't think he was angry either BUT it seems he was angry at the fact he didn't get a chance to respond. you know? he said "Hey.......if you'll allow me to respond." Like we never gave him a chance to.

Anyone remember Frogswife? I sure do wish she was around to answer this one.... she has such an awesome way with words. Anyhow . . . . the last part IMO is a load of crap.... no offense but it's a load of crap plain and simple.

That's fine Pixie you are allowed to speak your opinion. Just like I'm allowed to speak mine. Except when I speak my opinion Stoner's stupid arse jumps on me and says I'm wrong. Stoner I got some news for ya........OPINIONS ARE JUST THAT......OPINIONS!!! You can't say they're wrong just because you don't agree with it.Anyways...........You guys can call me what you want but I know the truth. I tried to be nice in the beginning and I tried to help people but then I gave my opinion on something and Stoner once again jumps on my back. I don't care if you like me or not. I don't care if you think I'm "way too sensitive", because I know the truth.Anyways..........this topic got WAAAYY off subject mainly because of me so from now on I wont post anymore. Except to defend myself.

Seems like the truth is your way too sensitive. As far as your opinions ,learn the difference between an opinion and an assumption. Don't assume you know how someone feels.

engalt,
You misread the tone of the post you call angry. The guy was asking permission to reply, because he was NOT a SEAL, but rather the relative of a SEAL. Stoner points this out to you and suggest that you get some thicker skin...a valid criticism as far as I can tell...then you go beserk and start whinning like a kicked dog. Suck it up and get over it.

Well, Pixie, I'm not Frogswife, but I am part of the decrepit old guard. My personal opinion is that the accuracy of the writing in that genre isn't all that precise. Although I appreciate Ms. Chastain's earnest desire to provide accurate information, I am hesitant to endorse providing any such information. When I've had the opportunity to look at some of the books of that genre (no offense, I call it "junk food for the brain") dealing with topic of our Warriors, I've been alternately amused, aggravated and disappointed in the portrayal of life away from "the office" and "the office's" effect on personal lifestyle. I've actually read some novels by a Rogenna Brewer dealing with the topic just to have somewhere to vent when I don't want to take a bad mood out on anyone else. So, I guess you could say these books serve a purpose, but assist in romanticizing a respectable career? No thanks.
