(If you want to skip the BS, drop to second paragraph)
I'll hit 17 in a few days, which legally clears me for DEP. I'm not going to sign up until I make sure I'm not color blind, after I find out if my eyes are good to go then I'll sign the contract.
My recruiter told me if I sign the SEAL contract on the DEP, and later on decide I want to change my A school from, lets say, IS to GM, he said I can still change my A school AFTER I sign the contract, stating me as wanting IS school. Is this true?

Best thing i can tell you is get what you want don't try and change anything because there will always end up beeing a problem. Get what you want the first time, besides recriters don't lie, why would they lie to you you? You have friends they want you to go back and tell them that hey go see so and so he took care of me, not hey this guy screwed me over big time. If he did let someone in recurting command know about it.

Hey child of God!
Long time no see. Hope training is going well. How is Alaska? It is pushing freezing here in Texas the last few weeks, so I am guessing it is pretty chilly up there.
I gotta agree 100% with Steel on this one. I have had the benefit of speaking to many in the Navy and Army about the recruiting process and the #1 thing they all say is get in writing exactly what you want before you sign anything. From that point, any changes are going to be ultimately based on where the need is, not on whether you want to change your mind.

Thanks fellas.
Hey there elpan, things are doing great. Good to see you're still around.
I talked to a certain SEAL on this site (no names), he told me not to post as much, and if there was one smart thing I ever did, it was listen to him.
Keep in touch,
God bless

ChildOfGod,
Definetly see it in writing before you agree to anything dealing with the military. The recruiters will lie and will help lie to get you into the navy, don't forget that. You can change your A school later on down the road but the likely repercussions will be a longer leave time. It will probably result in you having to wait a couple months more to ship out so definetly decide what you want from the get go. Good luck and hope your eyes turn out just fine.

Thank you daddythrowd.
One more thing - My recruiter tried convincing me that they teach the SEALs how to "breath water" so they can drown themselves all that much easier when being faced by potential imprisonment... that's why I doubt his honesty.
Thanks all 3 of you for the advice.

Well the first time I was in DEP the recruiter told me to drop out of high school and just get my GED in boot since I would not be able to leave on time for lack of credits to graduate. I did what I thought best and that was to stay in school and see it through. Now my recruiters are telling me that that was the best decision and that my old recruiter should have never told me what he did. One of my recruiters now though wanted to be a SEAL and was the only 1 out of 11 guys to pass the text in boot camp. He was pumped because all these SEALs were telling him they were gonna make him a SEAL and lets start the paper work. Well the A school he chose did not coincide with the SEAL challenge program so he did not get his chance at Bud/S. When he called his recruiter she said that, That is where the navy needed people and so she put him in there. I guess the point to all this is that yes your recruiter will lie and tell you all kinds of bull to get you in, so like spoken before make sure it is all in writing and when you go down to MEPs ask away at whatever you want because once you leave that building that is what your future in the navy pertains to.

I recently Dep'd in and I couldn't get IS. They told me its hard to get cuz there are never very many openings. But yes you can change your rating after you sign. If I'm correct there is a day in boot where everyone is asked if theyd like to change, now you have to factor in, will there be any openings, and you can't get jobs u dont qualify for. So try and get what you want from the beginning. I didn't get what I wanted but I got HM and I think now it was better for me.

Signing a contract at MEPS does not take place until you have successfully scored on the ASVAB and passed all the physical entrace exams at MEPS in order to be fully qualified. They will check to make sure you are not colorblind, that you have good vision, and more, all at MEPS. Your eyesight score appears on the paperwork that you'll be carrying the whole day at MEPS. After all the physical tests, then comes the part where you'll talk to counselors and sign contracts. Therefore you need not go out and get tested, since all the tests are done at MEPS, free of charge.

I will make this real easy for you. Just because you sign a contract at MEPs. It is about at binding as well you know. It isn't a real contract. DEP is nothing has no importance or anything else. What recruiters do not tell you is you can change your contract add or drop anyhing you wont. In fact you can just not go to bootcamp if you choose not too. Wether you believe me or not it doesn't matter. But I know the facts and rules of the military. So if you choose to change your rate then do it before you go in and everything is negotiable. That is the truth. You can get what you want all you have to do is demand it. As for changing to GM I wouldn't recommend it. IS is a good rate to have. If for whatever reason you don't make it through and would like to go back you will have a lot better option. Plus I don't know any IS's that complain. But all the GMs do (that I know).

I just want to say this... It seems that everyone wants to bash the military recruiters. Saying they lie and everything. You can't put all the blame on them. I am not a recruiter nor will I ever be one. But why is it you all blame them for everything. Have any of you checked or done any research on any off you future or are you just expecting them to do all the work. Also, are they lieing or are you not asking the right questions. I realize that some do but they are not all bad. You all have the best tool at your disposal. The internet. Try looking some stuff up about the navy on the internet. Don't blame recruiters because they don't sit there and spoon feed you everything. I did the same thing as all of you. But you know what, I am the one that didn't do the research for my career. I went by the small amount they told me. I just wanted to say it.
Also, I told you before. The contract that you sign is not valid or doesn
t start until you actuallt go to boot camp. You can pretty much do anything you want until you leave. As for changing rates it isnt in writing. All you have to do is tell your recruiter what you want. It is your right. I know because there are a few people at my present command that were coming in the apprenticeship program and changed there rates before they came in. It is just another page onto your contract. You will sign the change and that is it. You are done. You just have to make sure that you are qualified for that job. And yes there is a day in Basic where you talk to a counselor about your field choice. It is best to change it before then. A lot less paperwork.
