Here's a shameless plug for a fellow Team guy: Steve Robinson just published No Guts, No Glory: Unmasking Navy SEAL Imposters , which describes in detail the epidemic of phony SEAL claims over the last 1o years or so. In it he includes a brief history of Naval Special Warfare, the background on the BUD/S graduate database that R.D. Russell and his wife took great pains to create (at considerable personal expense), the flood of claims that was initiated after 11 September 2001, and tips on how to spot a phony SEAL. It's a great and quick read, which explores the psychology of the poser, and the extent to which people like this will go to get ahead in life.
Steve graduated from BUD/S in 1971, and did eight years with SEAL Team One. He left the Navy in 1978 and became a defense contractor, and currently pursues his passion for blacksmithing in Forsyth, Missouri.

I couldn't find it at amazon. Do you have the publisher's name and/or the ISBN?
Try: http://www.moosecreekforge.com/index2.html
The book is sold direct from Steve Robinson the author. Well worth the investment. In the book you will see just a sampling of the thousands of claims of those bragging to be a Navy SEAL. From this you will take away the feeling that the Navy SEALs have for anyone who claims SEAL fame without having earned it.

That makes me sick what can someone hope to accomplish by pretending to be a SEAL? How long does he think he can get away with it? I don't hate people like that but I don't understand why they do what they do.

Some of these losers use their "SEAL" status to threaten or intimidate others (the real guys don't normally feel a need to do this), gain favor for promotions or special positions in companies or organizations. The worst of the worst latch on to unsuspecting people (especially women), claiming they are subject to being "recalled to active duty", or "just back from a mission", "in between missions", or similar garbage as an excuse to live off of innocent people at no cost to themselves. There are phony SEALs teaching NJROTC (I got two of them fired, after many discussions with their supervisor), phony SEAL college professors, local politicians, civic leaders, Veteran's Affairs members, etc. They are a moral cancer on the face of the Earth. What really bugs me is when we catch these "SEALs" applying for high risk jobs, such as law enforcement (especially SWAT teams), firefighting, or personal security work, base on their "SEAL skills". I hate to think that people may be killed relying on some phony's "qualifications".
