Correct me if i am wrong, but if you sign the seal contract after you are physically qual and mentally qual how long does it take to go to buds from when you graduate your rate school? does it vary or do you go straight into training? how long does it usually take for a billet to open up?

Expect close to a year before you transfer to Buds. It really depends on how long your A-school is though. My recruiter told me one time, but I cant remember exactly. Plus you cant go untill another Buds class opens up.

{skip to the last couple lines of this text for my answer to the original post . . . i got a bit carried away in answering the question)
I enlisted on Oct. 31st and signed the SEAL challenge contract, and here's how it breaks down . . . first off i go to Great Lakes, IL for basic (i ship out april 22nd). As soon as that's over, which should take about 8 or 9 weeks, it's off to A School in Pensacola FL for parachute rigging (Aircrew Equipment Survivalman). I chose this A School because the length of it, as far as i can tell, depends on how fast you learn it. The sheet i got says "length: 3-7 weeks." Now comes the part i'm a little confused with. One of the books i read on SEAL training, i think it was Warrior Elite, by **** Couch, said that there are 8 indoc phases each year for BUD/S, which breaks down to one about every 1.5 months. Anyways, the show on the Discovery channel said that there were 4 BUD/S classes a year. hmmm, something doesnt add up there. either way, signing the SEAL challenge contract WILL GUARANTEE you a shot at BUD/S -- provided you pass the background check, PFT during basic, and make it through indoc phase. wow, i got a bit off topic there. back to your original question, as near as i can tell, one could be in BUD/S in as little as 6months after enlisting, or as long as a year or year and a half. hope this info helps
