View Full Version : During PT test do they let you dolphin kick between turns?

I've got my dolphin kick down pat now, and if able to use it could drop my swim times considerably- On the PT test would they let me do dolphin kicks underwater, in between turns (most likely no further than around 5 yards). Also would they let me do it on long distance swims in the pool, etc?
Thanks

I don't think they would care. For those of you that know anything about swimming I use to do a underwater breaststroke pull out. I could go 15-20 yds before coming up for my first side stroke pull.

As for the dolphin kick. That is the only way I ever did timed swims with fins on. With out fins I did regular side stroke. My swim buddy and I never lost a timed swim all through BUD/s and we both did dolphin kicking.

Kbar,
Is the timing on that the same as using the scissor kick (w/o fins), or continuous like the flutter kick?

E.G.... Dolphin kick... upper arm pull,.... bottom arm pull..... breath.... kick...etc..

Thanks

Thanks Kbar.

One more - Do they make you do sidestroke for the tests (screening test before BUD/S included), or can you do breastroke?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I was told that the PRT is done with Sidestroke. The breaststroke is not allowed. But, I could be wrong.

This was taken from http:/sealchallenge.navy.mil

"This is a standardized test, so ensure that you do NOT rearrange the exercises.

500 yard swim using breast and/or sidestroke in 12.5 minutes
10 minute rest
Perform a minimum of 42 push-ups in 2 minutes
2 minute rest
Perform a minimum of 50 sit-ups in 2 minutes
2 minute rest
Perform a minimum of 6 pull-ups (there is no time limit)
10 minute rest
Run 1.5 miles wearing boots and long pants in 11.5 minutes"

Yes, I know what it says and what it implys. A guy who's been to BUD/S said that wasn't really the case. He said you get there and they make you swim sidestroke.

But, it shouldn't really be a big deal anyway. Once you get to BUD/S, it's all sidestroke and if you can't make the PRT time, you're not gonna make it in BUD/S.

You are all confused, or you need to give more info when you write. It maybe just me, but when you wrote about the PRT, I automatically assumed that you meant the PRT taken at basic or at a testing station (for O candidates). At both places, breaststoke is allowed.

Like the Warrior Elite says, the instructors teach you Terry Laughlin's method of the CSS. Which is a combo of sidestroke, breast stroke and freestyle. So I'm sure you can pass the PRT with the standard sidestroke, but they'll teach you the CSS.
