i'm a 1st dan black belt in Goshin Kempo jiu-jitsu, i was wondering what blend of of the martial arts do BUD/s, Rangers, all SF troops , learn during training for the, not quite ideal, situation of being left unarmed in in combat area. I know it ain't gonna be the Steven Segal 47 blocks (it takes too long), any feedback would be great.

Hi Mac11, you are right, SEALs learn a BLEND of self defense tecniques and offensive combat moves taken from over 7 major arts which run from karate to jiu-jitsu!! to judo and aikido but only the most direct and functional tecniques are learned. SEALs prefer weapons to hand to hand for obvious reasons...most of your enemy may not BE unarmed! SEALs will use empty weapons AS weapons, then enemy weapons..then their knives...then freakin' 2 by fours or whatever mother nature has left lying around first. Hand to hand only as a last resort, And SEALs are taught to be unarmed only as long as it takes to get his hands on a fresh weapon....disarming a foe is also stressed because with the firepower ONE guy can field these days it is too much to be expected to bring your fist to a gunfight.

...Run...and hope you find a rifle...
THE SEALS USE A SYSTEM THAT WAS ORIGINALLY BASED UPON JERRY PETERSON'S "SPECIAL COMBAT REACTIONARY SYSTEM - OR SCARS" WHICH IS SOUPED UP SAN SUI KUNG FU (SP?) - A REAL HARD CORE COMBAT STYLE OF KUNG FU. THE TRAINING HAS SINCE BEEN MODIFIED TO INCLUDE OTHER SYSTEMS (LIKE JUT KEEN JO) THAT TEAM GUYS HAVE STUDIED AND FOUND EFFECTIVE.

If you want something that gets down and dirty try Tony Blauer's systems.
Get into the psycology of unarmed combat.Try his panic attack video very realistic.
but of course the street and battlefield are two different places.
ONE QUESTION. WHAT IS A SEAL RESERVIST AND WHAT DO YOU DO?

MARK--IS THIS THE SAME SCARS THAT MR. PETERSON HAS ADVERTISED IN SOF MAG? OR IS IT JUST ANOTHER UNFALLABLE,BEST THERE IS, USED BY ALL SF'S ADD?

This topic can be taken alot of diffrent ways
There are alot of martail arts that use weapons also
i would say Kali, escrima are the best for weapons
when it comes down to a street fight and then i would go with having a good wrestling double leg take down and decesnt boxing/ mauy thaior to know BJJ so either way if you are on your back or not you can lay down the law
and if we are talking about one on one in combat then i would say sig p228 or m4a1
or all of the above
peace out boys
who in this forum trains BJJ, hit me back with that and tell who, what, when and how long
i will give mine now
Brazilian jui jitsu- under Renzo Gracie, blue belt under Ricardo Almeidia- 5 years
wrestling- 3 years
boxing- 3 years
muay thai -2 years
and kali and escrima- 1-1.5 years

I taught at Bragg when I was on Smoke Bomb Hill. I taught boxing, wrestling, various martial arts and just good old street fighting. I taught that you find a few things that work for you and practice them for years.Stay off the ground if you can and forget the high flying kicks.I would much rather avoid you if I can and then, shoot ,stab,or club you .Like the others said, weapons of any kind first then use your mind and body. The goal is to be aware of yourself and your space and stay out of harms way.Remember it takes years of training to be good enough to go with just your hands and feet. What you see on TV is BS.
Be Safe,Best Regards,RR

i do a nasty form of karate called sikaran its a nasty street fighting system its a new system only about 50 years old so not alot fo ppl know about it. but we do **** that i dont think alot of ppl can handle. when we spar its bare fisted and very violent. its nuts if anyone has a sikaran studio near them i strongly suggest going. you can go to sikaran.com to see if theres any of them near you

i thought krav maga was the standard unarmed combat style used. i've come to believe that's what the "enemy" are learning from what i've read becuase krav maga did orginate in I raq.
I've doing capoeira for a few years now and i know that would be useless in unarmed combat...

Yeah i watch that episode of Fight Quest when they did krav maga. But for some reason i though it was an Israeli army method form of HTH combat. At least thats what i learned from the show.

You are correct. Isreal developed Krav Maga(pernounced krov muga). But at the SEAL platoon level, they use Duane Dieter's CQD(Full Circle Readiness)System.
As one SEAL has stated on the site, it's good for what it is intended for but not so much for a bar brawl.
I'm an MMA guy myself. 2 nights a week standup/striking. 2 nights jui jitsu. 1 day of open gym.

I just had my first krav maga class a few nights ago actually. Being new to martial arts and all, i dont have much knowledge of the other styles out there but krav maga definitely seems to be a no B/S system. pretty intense stuff. Cant wait to get more into it.
