Our son wants us to bring his car out (Midwest to California), for him and his buddies to use on the weekend. There are tough emission standards there. We do not want to endure the time and expense of delivering the vehicle if it does not pass standards out there. Anyone know how we can find out what the CA standards are and how we can determine if our car will pass before we haul it out?

Is there some reason it needs to be registered once it is out there? Seems like it would be easier to just keep the original license plates and registration on the vehicle and keep renewing that.

I dont know. California is WEIRD - thats why i dont live there. LOL They have some funky laws. I know our state, South Carolina has a 90 grace period. How long will your son be there?

Is it wierd or weird? Sorry. I had to ask because they BOTH look right to me.

Q: Importing a car into California with Northeast emissions:

When fees are due
Commercial vehicles and any vehicle owned by a California resident must be registered upon entry into California unless a special permit was obtained. Visitors whose vehicles are properly registered to them in their home state may operate their vehicles in California until they:

Accept gainful employment in California.
Claim a homeowner's exemption in California.
Rent or lease a residence in California.
Intend to live or be located here on a permanent basis (for example, acquire a California driver license, acquire other licenses not ordinarily extended to a nonresident, registered to vote).
Enroll in an institution of higher learning as a California resident or enroll their dependents in school (K-12).
Fees must be paid within 20 days of entry or residency to avoid penalties.

NOTE: Nonresident military personnel stationed in California or their spouses may operate their vehicles with valid out-of-state license plates from their home state or the state where the military person was last stationed.
