I have to ask this questions cause its been thumping in my head for awhile now. I know operators use these in the Teams ( the M4 with the 10.5 barrel) but Im just curious what you all think of them. Im in the Marine Corps Like I may of stated in my earlier post and Im gonna be used an M4 on my next deployment but I may be able to use a 10.5 barrel and I just wanna know the pros and cons.
Thanks ahead of time

Hey man,
First of all very good question, however this site is full of excellent info, and members have a wealth of knowledge. But, very few active duty SEALs and other military personnel come on the forum and rarely post (they are deployed or training to be deployed, so no time...). I would suggest socnet.com, it has a lot of active duty service men, both Special Operations and regular infantry, that would have the appropriate knowledge to inform you on your question. I know this is "Ask a Navy SEAL" but noticed no one had replied, and in your case this decision about your gun, could help/hurt you a lot during combat, so I figured I'd try my best to direct you where you could get several answers from BTDT's.
Best of luck on your next deployment, and thanks for your service.

beardch -- There are plenty here at NSC who have the knowledge to answer the OP's question. Some are BTDT's and AD SEALs. There are also other members of NSC who are quite competent to answer here as well. Just because you may not know who they are, doesn't mean others don't as well.
If you were to read some of the threads on weapons, you would certainly see what it is I'm referring to here. Perhaps if you spent some time reading through the threads here at NSC, you wouldn't be so quick to send other members over to socnet.com.
After going back and reviewing your posts, that seems to be your "stock" answer when replying. Sorry if you're offended but the way I see it, it's better to let those here with the knowledge/expertise answer as opposed to sending them elsewhere.

And, You dont know if someone has Private Messaged him. Some things you like to communicate in private. Not that it may be classified but it could be considered sensitive. Dont be fooled, there are more Operators on here (both AD and Out) than you know or are aware of. Just because they are posting up a storm doesnt mean there arent on or that you even know WHO they are.
Yes, SOCNET is a great site and some great guys (colorful characters too!) some have become good friends of mine. But I would suggest letting imdefaninja get his information, if he has a problem he will post. :)
Thanks

I like the M4. Shot it, carried it and CLEANEd it...a lot. Key word. Keep it clean. Doesn't the USMC have a complete armory with dudes all keyed up on questions like this?

Imdefaninja the 10.5” barrel has some advances, but most have a gas piston conversion. This as the receiver otherwise fouls more, and the bolt assembly heats up to much, due to the shorter gas tube length. I would go with the regular 14.5” barrel if no gas piston conversion is available. Without it the weapon becomes less reliable and loses in V0. JMHO.

Maybe accuracy at a distance will be affected. Could lose a little velocity if the ammo was made for a longer barrel...shot them both and love them both. But you got to figure if SEALs are using them then they got to be good.
EDIT: I haven't used the conversion that Amber is talking about but that would be the better of the two operating systems if available.

Ambassador1,
Roger that, will do. Also NSC is a great resource (don't think I don't think it is), sorry if I offended anyone, will post less when I have no knowledge.

Sorry for the LATE reply we had a KIA recently over here and I have been more occupied with that than the internet thank you for all the answers and suggestions
ddssdv: Our Armorers are horrible.. some of them dont even know the conditions of a 240 and dont know the difference between a Gulf and Bravo.. so asking them would be like asking a brick wall

ddssdv is gone, if you missed that. I know about the armorers. The GM's on my ship thought that you could use AK ammo in a M-60 because it was "7.62"....

Dont laugh, I had a good friend bought a bunch of 762.39 ammo to use in his .308 :D I just sat there grinning when nothing chambered and he finally said "WHAT!" I then explained the error of his calculation...luckily I knew the pawn shop owner where he got such a great deal and he was able to switch it out for the RIGHT stuff:)

We had the MK18 for our VBSS teams, got switched for the M4 for some reason. and i loved it. With the short barrel and colapsable stock the gun is very small and compact very good for CQC. the small size makes it very manuverable in tight spaces and if you have to get "hands on" with someone the smaller size helps getting the weapon out of your way so it wont hamper you. The furthest i've shot the gun was 50YDS and the groupings was perfect. Not sure on how it would do at further distances but for close in combat in ships, buildings, and street its awsome.

Yea thats good info but th thing is is that Im gonna be in Afghanistan so i dont think that Ill always be withen 50 yards of the person Im shooting at.. I can say from experience the people we've all shot at here since ive been in country have been at about 300 yards.
I just dont wanna get this for my next deployment and feel like the one guy with a shotgun in a Rifle fight...
whats happened to ddssdv anyways I hope nothing bad..

Well, if ANYONE can make things happen ~ Amir can. I cant say enough about him. We have so many good guys on here, we really do. A number of SEALS have been able to log back on recently, you will see them lurking around with knives in their teeth here and there.. SEALPUP121, Drew Brown, and of course bud/s 184 (also known as Honorman). SEALPUP is a 3 Tour Nam Vet, so if you want to talk about what it was like in the Mekong Delta and Brown Water Navy.. He can tell you.
Watch out for those damn Snipers huh Devin! Oh.. they captured a big time Terrorist lately in your AO... Didnt you hear about it? here's the picture.. Ha ha.. Take care..

But If he cant Ill understand. I mean the instructors might wanna start working on the PT alittle so they can keep up with me I dont wanna have to take breaks so they can catch their breathe. hahah ;-p
I might Eat those words haha

By the way, did you get the information about the M4 right? You definitely want to go with the long length barrel. The shorter is for the close quarters - in your face stuff. If you are going to be out in the Wild Wild West Devin, you know what I would select If I could get my hands on it?..
I used it many, many years ago. For the terrain ~ Afghanistan, its a heck of a Battle Rifle. Thats why they pulled them out of moth balls and started shipping them over there. These babies can put a round down range accurately at 800 meters...with NO problems (if you're good)...even further if you're DAMN good. If you got bad guys coming at you.. you put a round in the first guy it'll go through HIM and into the guy behind him...
IF you have to rock and roll, she will give you about 750-800 RPM ~ CRF.. but there are only 20 round mags...thats the problem. You can burn through one of those in 2.5 seconds.
Hell of a Rifle...
