Anyone tried out that $129 fin, mask, and snorkle from the "Shop" of this site? They look interesting and I'm thinking about buying. I have a mask without the nose guard. My main problem is the fog and I paid like 20 bucks for this mask. Would the 129 packet be better and protect me from fog?

Does anyone have any feedback on the different types of masks available in the NSC store if you have bought/tried them?

One other thing to is when I purchased my mask from the dive shop he told me that all mask and goggles come with some type of protective film on the glass and if you use tooth paste with your finger you rub on the inside of the mask and that will get it off. That will help with the fog, the tooth paste acts as a rubbing compound and will not scratch the lense.

Josh is right. Toothpaste and then spit is the best defogger. Jus rinse after spit don't wash. As for the mask the Maui is my fav for DIVING. Sucks for surface swimming. You need a spearfishermans low volume or goggles for surface swims. Also the rockets are diving fins. I have swam them on surface but they are more for power pushing gear and you thru the water. Duckfeet are the best surface fins. I used full foot planas at SDVT. The best surface fin I have ever used is the Vipers. Still have mine.

Question Dave. Would you only use toothpaste on new mask or can you use it on older ones too? Does it help with the fogging or just to take the new film off? Having grown up in Florida all my life as a kid we always used the crappy masks so spit is all we knew.

New only. Takes the preserve coating off. Then its spit. I have used dish soap but found that it ended up in my eyes. Hard to see with your eyes jacked up.

Thanks ddssdv for the tip on the fins. I will try that spit and toothpaste trick this weekend.
When you say spit in the googles, do you mean just spit, rub, then put it on? Or do you mean, jump in the pool, spit, dump the goggles in the water, then wear?
Also, another question for ocean swims... besides a partner... how important is it to wear a swimmer's vest? What does it come with? Like let's say I'm in the middle of the water about .25 miles off coast and suddenly I get a cramp and have to do a backstroke to the beach, could I inflate the vest then help me swim backwards toward the beach?

Spit on the side of the pool or on the beach, swill it around, and dip it once then put it on. No fog. Goggles work as well.

Wear a vest. With a swim buddy, he needs a vest as well and know your abilities.

Yes your vest could save your life in many ways you jus gave one as an example.
Main deal in the water.
1. NEVER panic
2. Never swim in conditions you are no used too.
3. Have the right gear and in good order. Check before every swim ie. straps, seal, lense.
4. DO NOT swim to exhaustion. Could kill you. Save some for getting home.
5. USE COMMON SENSE.

I tried that spit trick last night and it worked! Man, I really appreciate this tip! Now I can swim my full mile without ever having to stop and clean my goggles. This is seriously one of the best tips I've gotten off the internet. lol.

hi guys; i've been searching up and down the forums and can't seem to find the answer to my question. what fins do they issue at bud/s? i'm looking to buy a set to help me prepare and want to get the ones they issue at bud/s. does it really matter which you buy so long as you get your legs used to it?

Spit on the side of the pool or on the beach,
Wonder how many kids walked out to the pool (hopefully public) and stood there on the side, mask in hand, and out of nowhere, spit on the side of the pool; and then jumped in thinking, well, that's what he said. :) :) :)
I crack myself up...

Another trick that works like a champ is a very light film of toothpaste on the inside of the goggles/mask. Plus it leaves your eyeballs feeling minty fresh.
