I am 17 years old (turn 18 next month). I am a junior in high school. I plan to get a GED this summer and get into the navy with a SEAL challenge contract. Thus skipping my senior year. i don't have any college credits. My grades throughout highschool have been nothing special. just around the c range.

Will this work for me?

Ironknee, can I give you the same advice I gave another young man? (not that its canned). Stay in school, finish High school and get your Diploma. Life goes too fast as it is - Ask ANY of us old guys.

The problem is, whats one of the first things the Navy will do? Put you in SCHOOL. If your grades are nothing special then you are not going to do very well in the Navy. The technology we use these days in the Military is incredible. What we used when I was in was LIGHT years beyond what was available in civilian life at that time.

The Navy isnt going anywhere, the SEALs arent going anywhere. Make a life habit to FINISH what you start otherwise you will end up not finishing other very important things in life.

PLEASE take my advice. The adventure will come soon enough...Its only one more year, stick it out and finish it.

Thank you for the advice, i should probably take it. But i've thought about it for a long time and have talked about it with my parents and school counselors. I simply can't stomach another year of high school. I was held back before and i feel like the time for me to become a seal is now. I've been studying hard so that i can ace the asvab and the ged test. being a seal is the only career path i wanna take in the Navy. So if i can to that with just a GED, then im 150% sure that's the path i want to take.

is it possible?

Ironknee,
I usually don't post a lot but feel I should give you a little advice. FINISH High School. A GED is almost completely useless in todays society. Yes, it is better than not finishing High School at all, but not by much. Trust me, you can stick it out for one more year. Take that time to train your a$$ off and learn as much as you can. Time goes by really fast and you'll never regret having your diploma, it can never hurt you, a GED can.
Like OLDSWABBIE stated, the world's most powerful Navy will still be here when you are done.

I'm currently finishing High school FYI

you have a 20% chance of passing BUD/s so If, IF your Physically and Mentally prepared then what about Dive Phase? When you have to learn Dive physics what if you just aren't smart enough I'm a young one in high school I'm 17 and graduating and I know what you mean man I'm sick of school but I'm trying to force myself to at least go to college and get a degree you have to think long term do you want to make SEAL team a life Career? Then you should want to be an officer at some point if you get college done first then you can go to OCS when you want(at convince of the NAVY) if you have no degree(to my understanding) you can't go to OCS so then you'll go to school while in the Teams. If you plan on leaving the Teams and having a family how are you going to raise a family with a GED?

I know I haven't lived any of what I just preached past I'm sick of school but I'm just trying to put those kind of questions in your head so that you know what your thinking about doing. This is one of those mental tests man can you Suck up schooling for one more year and be in that much better shape before going to BUD/s

I believe the SEALs have like over 50% of the enlisted guys have College degrees. Not sure if thats correct so I went lower than I thought anyway thats not because a lot of 18y/o have college degrees its because the older guys are in better shape Physically and mentally and all the guys that think they are ready out of high school aren't.

Ironknee your rushing it. Your time is your most valuable asset, use that to your advantage. Learn everything you can before you go through BUD/S. Once you do there is no turning back. Don't let your ego fool you. It doesn't matter if it's possible or not. Why take the chance?

Oldswabbie is right. After High School .Time flys so by fast, that hours are like 10 minutes. I mean literally. Plus on top of that. By dropping out you just wasted 12 year's.

Like Oldswabbie said learn to finish what you started. If don't grasp that, how can you learn to finish anything else you started? If you get your high school diploma. I mean get it. Don't take that for granted.

I slacked off for 3 year's, in my senior year. I had to complete two semesters in one. That is 16 courses. It was literally stressful as hell, running on 5-6 hrs of sleep, because I constantly did homework at 3 am. I got the damn diploma, and now it's the past. I look back on it, and just laugh now.

Well that's my 2 cents.

Dude, high school is NOTHING. Seriously. Besides that, you have to finish and graduate. It's not even an option. With a GED the Navy will tell you to go get 15 college credits. So then you'll have to go to some college for a semester in order to qualify.

A buddy of mine is going through this same process right now. He dropped out of high school, got his GED, and tried to enlist. The Navy recruiters told him that they wouldn't take him without 15 college credits.

So there you go.

I'm a senior in high school, and am planning to get a degree before joining he navy and going to buds. I recently talked to a SEAL, and he told me not only to finish high school, but finish college before joining the teams. He said it makes you more mature, and that an education is the most important thing to do before you go off to buds. Even a lot of the enlisted guys are going in with college degrees now. In buds, one of the most important things to do is continue when you want to quit. And take rob's advice and use the extra time to train and get ready for buds. You can never prepar too much.

Not to be too negative but perhaps a reality check is in order, if you cannot make it through/deal with HS do you really think that you will be able to make it through BUD/S?

how long ago was that? i spoke to someone at a recruiting station and he said they even accept high school drop outs (no GED, no college credits). He said that i just had to be 18 and score higher on the asvab

IronKnee,

You see what I mean. Every single person has said the same thing because we REALLY do want the best for you. Stay in school. Finish it - be DONE with it and go on. What is the SEAL motto? - NEVER QUIT How can you seriously put that in your heart and complete bud/s, sqt, sere, jump? You cant seriously believe it but yet have quit High School. And again, you almost have to have college credits to even look attractive to the Teams.

The Teams dont just want guys that can swim great and do a helluva lot of push ups/pull ups. They want SMART guys. They NEED guys who can think fast and are extremely intelligent - besides being tough as friggin nails. Otherwise to quote what i've read in here previously.... all I see in your future is a Brass Bell and Paint Chipping...

SO - tough it up dude, this is your FIRST TEST on your way to the Navy and to SEAL training. Your first task is to finish High School.... On your mark... GO! Hoo-Yah!

Repeat after me "I will not believe everything a Recruiter tells me...I will not believe everything a Recruiter tells me" :)

O boy, the horror stories of Recruiters lies and half-truths. Before any Recruiters pull out the Mark V flamethrowers and toast the OldSwabbie .... NOT ALL RECRUITERS are like this, but there are a few bad apples that will do anything to get the numbers.

You NEED the best education you can get before you go in the Navy

Lycurgus, if you stumble in here a word or two would might help.

Okay, talked with my recruiter again today. I was really upset at first when he told me to go get my diploma. But now i guess i just gotta put out for one more year. I don't have any friends which makes school that much harder, but o well. gotta get through this, day by day. take it one evolution at a time. Then soon i'll be out of here. Just hope i dont get injured or lose my motivation =(

Listen Kid, this guy knows what he's talking about, listen to me Thia dude sounds pretty intelligent to me. I'm going to bud/s 18 weeks after may 16, My senior year was awsome, it gives you time to get into some seriously physical shape. BUD/s is no cake walk it will be the hardest thing you will ever do in your entire life. stay in school its important. The teams are not going any where. they wait for ya.
Train Hard

Thanks Lanky...

Take em one day at a time, thats all you gotta do. Thats what we all have to do. Each one of us has a cross to bear in some way or another. You guys are just starting out on your Navy adventures, mine seem like an eternity ago....but then again they seem like a breath ago. Time is wierd that way. No matter what kind of training you are going through, you take it one day at a time. If you cant take it like that, drop it to an hour at a time and keep going.

The same way with Life. You set Short, Mid and Long term goals for the same reason.

I dont know if you saw Jabadiahs post or not and our discussion. I described one of my hardest day's in the Navy. My entire Navy career was at stake almost before it even got started. Like I said though, one afternoon at bud/s would make that look like nothing...but for the condition I was in, it was damn tough (link below)
