I'm scheduled to finish OCS at the end of September this year. I believe that will put me a part of Class 275, since I read in another thread that Class 274 starts September 8th. Just wondering if anyone out there is speculating that they will be a part of this class....

Congratulations !
If you don't mind, can you post your stats here (college, GPA, major, PST, extracurriculars) or possibly email them to me if you want to keep it private? I'm planning on heading to OCS in a bit and I'd like to know what I need to get in. Of course I read all the recommended stats, but I want to know how guys' actual states are looking.

I don't understand. Why doesn't INDOC start after the holidays, like sometime early January?

I dont think you can win no matter what you do. I was a "Native" Floridian - went to boot in Orlando.. July-Aug-Sept ~ Thought I was gonna die (We live in Paradise now, South Carolina). My Stepson Jason grew up in Florida almost all his life. He went in the Navy - Great Lakes - Winter of 2001... Go figure. LOL

I was much like Oldswabbie. I grew up primarily in the deep South most of my life and spent my time outdoors in the summer. Went to boot camp in Orlando June-early August. I can't count the number of days we'd come into the berthing fresh from the grinder and be completely 100% saturated with sweat.

What Year did you go to Boot in Orlando? Brutal huh, Even for "Natives" :)

About 12 years after me, probably hadnt changed much. I still have my "Rudder" book. I bought a copy of the 45rpm record of boot camp sounds too. I play it once in awhile and get teary eyed remembering back 32 years ago being that "wide eyed" boy. :)

I've lived in Chi Town my entire life. September and October are beautiful months here with temperatures anywhere from the mid 60's to the high 70's. The heat and humidity from the dog days of summer are gone. Anyone going to Great Lakes from December through February had better be prepared for bitter cold weather. February is the coldest of the winter months here. If you aren't properly dressed (layer on top of layer) when the wind comes blowing in off of Lake Michigan that air will leave you bone cold. It's not called the windy city for nothing!

Good luck to "275". We were in Great Lakes in February 08 for boot graduation. Very cold during our visit(11 degrees). My son said lots of time spent indoors in swim training during this cold weather.

For the life of me, why did they close Orlando? Instead of Fried Bananna's now we have popsicicles for recruits! :D

It's not called the windy city for nothing!

Just a little info:

Actually a lot of people think the name windy city was named because it's windy in Chicago. It's not any more windy than a lot of towns along Lake Michigan. Chicago isn't even in the top list for windiest cities in the U.S.

The real reason Chicago was nicknamed the Windy City was not for the wind but for the politicians and city boosters who were full of "hot air." It got its nickname back when the politicians were boasting about the city and trying to get the World's Fair to come here (which it did). Other cities saw this boasting and called us the "windy city" because of all the hot air the politicians were spewing.

Yes, that's true but it is only one theory. There are a few more and we may never know how Chicago actually became known as the "Windy City". Regardless, I wouldn't want to be at GL during the winter months; cold temps, biting winds and plenty of snow.

Not much has changed

No signs of it changing in the near future either!

For the life of me, why did they close Orlando?

I have some friends that live in Orlando and when that round of bases closings came around I gave them a call. They said that it was pretty much a fore drawn conclusion that Orlando RTC/NTC was going to get shut down. The reason being that the land value was SO much greater than Great Lakes. As I understood it at the time, San Diego wasn't a consideration for closure presumably due to the large operation base there as well.

Yep, the property prices rose in Florida drastically as well as San Diego. As we all know.. $$$ Talks... The Congressmen tried to keep them but in the end the developers were just holding too much money.

I hated to see both bases close, I was at both Orlando and San Diego.

Could you email me or PM me your stats as well if you find the time. I am in the process of applying to the DEC 08 SEAL O board. Advice or tips you have would be appreciated as well. Have a lot of friends who have gone USNA/ROTC to BUD/S but non from OCS.

Thanks
