So, it's always been a dream to be in the Navy Seals. After high school I went to college and it had always been on my mind. Now, at 28, I know the time to join is running out, and I am beginning to seek out my Contract. I know I'll have to get Lasik before-hand, get in much better shape, etc., but my question is...
Has anybody gone from being a straight civilian...9-5, never had any military training, etc. to gaining a Seal contract and actually finishing BUDs?
I've always been an athlete and in decent shape. I think my age and experience in the "real" world will help out mentally. I know with the right training I can do it, but would love to hear some stories about people going from an everyday Joe to a Navy Seal...Thanks for any feedback.

Dont worry about what other people have done, if you want to be a SEAL bad enough, bust your ***, get your contract and make it through BUD/S.
I believe the founder of this site was in a similar position. I read in an interview that he was getting bored to death with being a CPA, and decided to join the Navy to become a SEAL. I also have the pleasure of knowing another active duty frog that went into the fleet after college, spent ten years with surface warfare, then decided at the age of 32 that he wanted a challenge, went to BUD/S , graduated at the age of 33, and is now a master chief in the teams. Anyone can do it, you just have to want it more then anything. If you make it to BUD/S, they will teach you everything you need to know about being a frogman. A lot of recruits probably have never fired a weapon in their lives until third phase at BUD/S. Dont worry about not having any military training. There are a ton of good resources on this site on how to prepare for BUD/S. Poke around the crossfit section and check out some of the WOD's. The BUD/S warning order or Stew Smiths 12 weeks to BUD/S are also good things to start with. Good luck!

Depending on your eye situation, the Navy might be able to give you PRK once you arrive in Coronado.

I agree with you 100%. I will be making a similar transition to you - leaving a nice career behind, but I've always regretted not serving. I plan on enlisting later this year, at the age of 33. Old? No, I consider myself seasoned. ;) My PT numbers are all in excess of what is "competitive," except my swimming, which is what I'm focusing on before I take the PST for a SEAL Challenge Contract.
Good luck in your pursuit.

The rate of SO has been around since 2006, so in that time people have graduated. As an example, when a fleet sailor goes to BUD/s and so on and becomes a SEAL, often they keep their original rate, unless they transfer rates. You will notice sailors addressed not as Mr. or Mrs. whatever, but AOC so and so or MA1 whoever. So if you've ever read a article pertaining to an operator and they are referred to as SO so and so, then its safe to assume they might have unlisted under the new rate and became qualified.
