Just sending this question out as a general inquiry. I know they say smaller guys (5'10"ish 170-185) usually thrive in the SEAL training, but there are also the few exceptions. I know Clint Burke was a larger trainee (6'6"). Have there been others that you guys know of that have been successful as larger (210lbs +) trainees?

if you've watched Class 234, Lively was 220. He still is a massive guy, but he did mention that he had to try twice as hard. He said the smaller guys have it easy, but I'm sure instructors are aware of that, and give the smurf crews their fair share.

Wasn't Luttrell pretty big as well?

Yeah Luttrell was like 6'5'' 230 i believe. But he made up for it with mental toughness. Hell, the guy cracked his femur falling of the 50ft rope tower, then continued on for several weeks without mentioning it to medical. He also suffered severe stress fractures (as mentioned in "The Warrior Elite") and had trouble completing the timed runs. At one point, i think it was Jason Birch, tied a rope between him and Luttrell and forced him through their 3rd phase long runs and rucksack marches. But Luttrell was hard as hell and didnt quit, in the same respect he was able to come back alive after Redwing. Hell of a guy. Btw im 6'2'' 190lbs, small by no means..this ongoing debate about the ideal SEAL size is garbage, all sizes have made it, just gotta want it.

Exactly!! Both my b-i-l's are at each end of the spectrum. One's a big guy then other quite the opposite and they both wanted it and got it.

Don't quote me on this, but as far as I remember, there was a guy in TWE that the author said was 5 foot 2 and "pound for pound, the toughest guy in the class". My copy of the book got destroyed, I had to throw it out, so I can't use it for reference. I'm sure those of you who've read the book can verify this info for me. Just out of curiosity, anybody remember how much he weighed?

It's not the size of the trainee, it's the size of his desire.

Im pretty sure the guy your talking about in the book was 112 lbs or something crazy like that. I bet that dude could PT his *** off though.

I think Phil Black played basketball for Princeton and he was very tall, maybe 6' - 6" at least

There is no one height/weight/body size that makes a guy a SEAL.

It's not their size, it's how they carry themselves, both mentally and physically.

It was The Finishing School, not Warrior Elite. I think 5'2'' and 120ish. I'm 5'6" and 140, and remember thinking if that guy can hump that ruck around in SQT I'll definitely never have any excuse to quit.

Thanks for clarifying, I can see why I mixed them up. Both being written by D!ck Couch and all.

I really appreciate all the feedback guys. I know its all about the mental toughness and attitude, I just wanted to see about other big guys that have made it. I'm 6'2" 255lb SO in college. Play DL in football and wrestle HVY here at school. Every offseason I put on more muscle and I just wanted to get a ballpark range of where I may be comfortable come time. Thanks!
