Got a question here guys? is there a Specific Martial Arts Training (Tae kwon do,karate, mui thai etc) that would benefit you in knowing prior to S.E.A.L Training?

Hey,
I don't really know exactly, but i've been browsin around the forums, and i've heard ju jitsu mentioned a few times. i've been lookin for a mixed martial arts school for awhile now. i'd go with mixed martial arts. it is a combination of many kinds of martial arts and can be EXTREMELY beneficial.
just my two cents.

What options/choices do you have?

Any Martial Arts training will help, but unarmed combat is a different ball game but any previous training will help. Karate and Ju Jitsu will be of the most use to you.

Years ago I asked an old SC SEAL basically the same question, I got a grunt before he summarily dismissed me...<laughing now>. Personally? I think he used his Kbar for a toothpick and didnt need martial arts :)
Later on I ended up taking Shotokan for a year or so and loved it. A mixture (once you get one art down well) might be a good idea.

You could also look into Krav Maga Theres a place in my town that has a former Marine as an instructor and they show you how to fight realistically as well as what to do when the other guy has a knife or hand gun and your unarmed, as well as submission stuff.

Yeah that Krav Maga is no joke, i saw that episode on fight quest, those Israelis do not play around. Was that the one where Doug KO'd that dude with a head kick? That was sick, his mouthpiece went flying and he was OUT. But yeah KM looks like it would be a very functional and effective form for combat forces to use in close quarters.

Hey sometimes it's just better to kill em right away :D
As to the original question, no matter what ANYONE says, there is no such thing as "the ultimate" Martial arts style, "the best" or whatever...
Adaptability, Training and Aggressiveness are essential to winning a fight, no matter what style you've learned, your number one objective in a fight is to WIN, by disabling or killing your opponent(depends on what the law will find acceptable ie: the most force "legally" acceptable) and at the same time, minimizing or avoid injury entirely when possible.
Sometimes it's just best to pull out your gun and shoot them if they have a knife, beer bottle, screw driver, etc... perfectly justifiable in court, sometimes hitting them in the nuts and throat, Whatever you can do that you can get away with.
Personally, I carry as much weapons as I legally can and within 10 days the above mentioned firearms that I own when I recieve my CWP.
As for training, other than calithenics, cardio, etc.... I bought "dummy" knives, gloves, "training rounds" for the Sig which basically have a spring behind the primer...no explosives and have my friend "stab me" or try to while I execute defensive moves, have him "break in and rob my house" while I go through the moves I would in a real situation with the dummy rounds and when we go to the range have him load dummy rounds with real ones so I treat them as "jams" and clear it.
We also do other things when it comes to fighting, be sitting down outside and out of nowhere have him come up after waiting for a few minutes so I wouldn't expect him or what he would do, etc....
My house has been robbed within in the last couple of years, been in a ****load of fights and avoided a lot more, be adaptable and once the **** goes down and once the guy/girl declares their hostile intent towards you be as aggressive as possible while appearing to be the victim to the officers, never say" I whacked him, I killed him, I beat him up" but "I had to defend myself, he left me no choice, he forced me to...etc...." if you say you killed someone even in self defense situations, you just said you killed! murdered someone! the cop doesn't give a **** about you, arrest you and let the system sort you out! you're just another number/victim/criminal who cares??? not them!!
I personally know people who served time because they defended themselves rather than be victims! remember if you want to avoid ANY legal issues, get raped, mugged or robbed then call the cops, never defend yourself! HA! and always Put the CUTE in EXECUTE!! :D
Tear gas sprays, not pepper spray is very good against multiple unarmed attackers as it is most certainly non-lethal forces but still very effecient, I sprayed myself in the face to test it, it works pretty good.
Looks like I drifted a bit from the original question again, but just be physically fit(duh), be like a sponge when it comes to information and follow what they tell you when it comes to CQB, their methods obviously work.....:D

I assume that the only Martial arts that would really be beneficial prior to being a SEAL is a Private Karate class. They teach you how to shock the body effectively and quickly until your able to pull your secondary weapon or knife. But any other kind of Martials Arts will be a plus to your knowledge

Just thought id throw in an update about Krav Maga and my personal experience/progression. I just tested into my Grad level 2 (blue belt), next is brown but it will take a while. I started a little over 2 years ago before all the hype hit about KM. I was fortunate to have a great instructor close by to practice. In the two years i have learned a great deal about the human body and its limits, or lack of, a side of mental toughness i will need for SWCC school later this year, and the payoff for hard work and dedication. Though i may never use KM in the military, its well worth the knowledge and sense of accomplishment. You gain a enormous boost of self confidence, discipline, and it eliminates any bit of day to day fear you may have had quelling inside yourself. I use to be hesitant of walking around the bad areas of town with gangs of 8+ thugs. Now ive learned that it is really only a threat if you are unable to defend yourself and eliminate the threat itself, which is really just a group of helpless, pathetic, weak minded trash. KM doesn't teach you to go out looking for fights, just how to deal with the situation if it arises, often unsuspectingly. So i would encourage those of you looking into martial arts lessons to consider that there are many benefits, not just kicking some ***. Besides there is always the chance your gun jams or some hard headed marine wants to throw down. In that event, KM is one of the nastiest, most brutal, dirty forms of MA that is out there. And if you work hard, you can progress fairly quickly in KM as well, and lessons are reasonably priced.

i completely agree, i've been checking that stuff out and it's rowdy style. very practical, too.

I recommend Judo. I've done a lot of different sports and Judo is definitely one of the most difficult things I've ever done. What can be harder than trying to pick someone up and throw them while they are trying to do the same to you. Judo develops everything necessary for an elite level of fitness: strength, endurance, agility, and power. Judo also teaches you how to remain focused while under extreme fatigue. When fighting an experienced Judoka even a momentary lapse in concentration means that you are about to get slammed, arm bared, or choked out. During a typical two hour practice expect to be thrown 30 to 40 times and to be arm bared and choked dozes of times. There are few athletes tougher than a Judoka.

The dude above got it right... I've been a martial artist since I was about 7. The only thing that matters once you get to REAL LIFE is who wins and who's dead. Jock up like a mofo, get aggressive, get REALISTIC training. None of that Kung fu... do this kata and you can magically fight like a dragon BS. Find a dirty hole in the wall with a bunch of scary *******s to fight and you're in the right spot.
In the end though, you will get training later. For now, it's whatever. Work on your swim.

MMA, wrestling, boxing, and muay thai would be the best in terms of your conditioning.

Another sick martial art, imo, can be Pekiti Tirsia, of the Phillipines. They say that it can be considered more of a killing technique than a sport-oriented martial art. I also hear that you have to sign a death waiver to participate in classes

lol... death waiver. Pikiti tershia is the real deal though. Dunno about that school / instructer. All the filipino martial arts are badass imo, long as you train them realistically, in realistic situations. Overall you're safest with MMA, they tend to have the most brutal training nowadays which is kind of sad. I mean.. sport fighting having more brutal training than a "real" fighting art. Weak.
