Greetings!

Our oldest son is in the Navy stationed in Norfolk. Our youngest son also decided to join, and has passed his PST. I am honored to know that my only two children (now men) have decided to help defend our Country, with that being said, is there anything that we can do to help our youngest with preparation, prior to BUDs (diet, trainer, etc.)? He is currently working on building his running endurance and swimming. He is currently in the DEP and is scheduled to ship out to Basic Sept. 8th.

I found this site in hopes of locating something that we can do to help in anyway we can. We did find the Workout of the Day, which our son is printing and working on (great tool!). Are there training tapes available? If our son trains according to the Workout of the Day, will he loose conditioning during Basic?

I want to say “Thank You” to everyone who is serving our country; it is a great honor and a privilege to know that you are out there. We pray that you will have knowledge, wisdom and strength over the enemy in everything that you do.

Best Regards,
Navy Mom

Thats good I'm in the Navy myself. I'm training myself preparing to go to BUDS. A Book I would reccommend is The Navy SEAL Physical Fitness:12 weeks to BUDS by Stew Smith. Its hard and that workouts start to get long but it pays off. That book helped me get a great amount. They sell it in the store on this site. Those workouts of the Day are great, I jus think its not enough for training for BUDS. Pushups, flutter kicks, situps, and pullups, swimming and running. Those are the main things i like to do.

You probaly already know abouthe SEAL contract, your son will be in a division at basic with other BUDS cadidates and SEAL motivators. So if he gets there and its not that hard thats probaly somewhat of a good thing. Another site to check out is seal.navy.mil theres a lot of good info on there.
good luck to your sons.

I disagree. The WOD on this site will get you in better shape than any other program I've seen. I have not been to BUD/S but I must say that these WODs have improved my fitness tenfold. There's a reason that Crossfit workouts are actually used at BUD/S
Now I'm not saying the Stew Smith book won't work (because it will), but it mainly prepares you for the PST. You'll be doing a lot more than just pushups, flutterkicks, situps, pullups, swimming, and running at BUD/S, so you might as well get ready for it. The Crossfit WODs prepare you for that.

If I were in your son's position I would do the WOD on this site every day as it is posted, along with some extra running and swimming in the afternoon. Maybe even 2 WOD's a day, one from this site and another from Crossfit.com although be very careful about burning out or overtraining.

I haven't been to basic but I've read that guys do lose their conditioning there because there isn't enough PT at basic. They have to sneak in pushups or whatever.

Not sure what he'd need training tapes for. There's a swimming video on Youtube - search combat side stroke navy or something like that.
Also there's a great DVD documentary to give you an idea of what BUD/S is like : http://www.amazon.com/Navy-Seals/dp/B000QFAFS6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1206790604&sr=1-1

Just my $0.02 as a prospective BUD/S trainee.
