I tried swimming 500 meters with the side stroke the guy does in the video, but my time was 12:46. How do some people do it in like 8 minutes? I am doing exactly what the instructor in the seal video is doing.

Practice makes perfect. To get swim times that are really low guys use little tricks in the water. Concentrate on stroke development if you want to lower your time.

Just keep watching the video over and over. If you are swimming the whole time exactly how he is in the video, you are going pretty damn slow. Find out where the Navy people in your area are swimming.(call a recruiter and ask for the spec war coordinator's number)

Practice, and if you're not a strong swimmer like myself, strength and perfecting your own method of sidestroke. I am a horible swimmer but worked long and hard. In the end I swam a best of something like 70:02.

Just keep swimming and keep increasing your distance/time in the water. When doing the 500 yard your arms and shoulders should be burning and you should feel sick when you're done. If that was the case don't feel bad and keep practicing, if NOT try giving it more effort.

yea just to chip in- when i first learned CSS in august 2007, I couldn't even swim ten laps of breast stroke continuously, let alone CSS. since then, i've watched my time drop significantly, and now i'm in the competitive range. it just takes dedication and laps. the more time you devote to it, the stronger you'll become.

May sure to stay on your side the whole time, and get a really fast open turn on the wall. Those 2 things alone should drop atleast a minute off your time. Other than that technique work and dedication will get you where you want to be.
